YA! I'm focusing in on upper YA this year that appeals to the crossover/new adult space. I am looking for YA mysteries/thrillers; graphic novels; fantasies (see above); historical; and contemporary! Anything above I'd love to see in an YA-appropriate setting!
Mysteries! I adore mysteries that rework classics like "The Wife Upstairs" or "One by One". Give me all your queer/BIPOC historical mysteries such as "Dead Dead Girls". I want queer/BIPOC Agatha Christie, friends!
Annalise Errico @AnnaliseErrico✨2022 MSWL✨
It only took a month, but I have finally updated my #MSWL! I'm so excited to dive into a new year of reading all of your manuscripts. Here's what I'm looking for:
Academia! Give me all of those old-book vibes. I want dark academia with historical mysteries; professor MC/love interests a la Dani Brown; the excessive mentioning of tomes like in "A Discovery of Witches"; and an abundance of libraries!
—Mystery and horror in certain genres (In mystery, think cozies or women’s fiction-adjacent, instead of hard-boiled detective stories; in horror, think Hill House, not Halloween).
—Character-driven sci-fi and fantasy. Send your sweeping, sexy Kushiel’s Dart-style epics, please!
Seeking literary & commercial crime/mystery, thriller & speculative/scifi. Unique hooks & new, diverse views in these classic genres. Linguistic & storytelling mastery, high personal stakes, psychological depth.❤️Tana French, Hervé Le Tellier, Octavia Butler, Kazuo Ishiguro #MSWL
Need an upbeat novel or contemporary mystery with the specific vibe of the Catskills episodes of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, adult simon says and Susie traipsing around with a plunger included #mswl
Michelle Richter📚 @Michrichter1Hi lovely writers, just a reminder if you query me, pls don't email me if you want me to read it. Instead, submit through Query Manager here: QueryMe.Online/MichelleRichter
I'm looking for thrillers and suspense that make me gasp at the twists, mysteries with sleuths to root for. BIPOC/LGBT/disabled voices very welcome. #MSWL
My white whale (I have been asking for years!) is an atmospheric traditional contemporary mystery in the vein of Louise Penny and Suzanne Chazin. Bonus points if the author and characters are both marginalized! #MSWL
Norma @normajeanesaysHello, literary agents! It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, so here’s a thread of #MSWL requests, aka the submissions I want to see in my inbox:
First off, work by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or disabled authors are always welcome in the genres I edit, which includes romance yes, but also mystery and thrillers, upmarket fiction, fiction with fantasy/sci-fi/ speculative elements that are mainstream crossovers, and nonfiction.
ALWAYS want #YA whodunnits/mysteries that are puzzle-y or riddle-strewn and have touches of humor and lively characters in the spirit of Agatha Christie, like #TrulyDevious or the Inheritance Games series. #MSWL #amquerying
I'm looking for #YA survival stories in the vein of #Yellowjackets (the teen timeline), #TheWilds or even something like Wilder Girls. Questions! Mysteries! A hint at mystical or fantastical without going full fantasy. #MSWL #amquerying
I would love to see more mystery novel submissions in the vein of @OnlyMurdersHulu. I adore the old-fashioned glamour of the apartment block setting (yet modern tone), the witty, off-beat characters & podcast that brings the 3 sleuths together. Also v. keen on @KnivesOut.
An interviewer asked me if a writer were to write something directly for me, what would it be. The first thing that came to mind was a MG or YA queer cozy paranormal mystery. #mswl
(🧵5/7) #Thriller & Suspense:
- We are mainly looking for romantic suspense, spy thrillers, action thrillers, and crime thrillers.
- We also accept psychological thrillers, cozy mysteries, historical, heist, conspiracy theories, revenge, etc. Apply if you don’t see yours. #MSWL
Generally, I’m looking for YA contemporary, thriller, mystery, horror, historical fiction, high fantasy, and sci-fi stories.
In MG, I’m looking for contemporary, action/adventure, mystery, fantasy, and sci-fi stories. #mswl
novels with contemporary settings need to contain at least one of the following elements: mystery, suspense, thriller, horror, or any kind of speculative something
In YA/Adult/Graphic Novel, I love:
🕵️A locked room mystery or a closed set thriller, like Detention (2021)
🏺Dark academia that really grapples with what it means to be a person of color in academia and the complicity it begs of you in its racist and classist structures
I am completely up to date on queries and nearly so with requested MSS (just 3 in the queue!) so am in dire need of more! Please send your "comps to KJ Charles" specfic romance, Hannibal-esque sexy horror, dark academia, MG mysteries, and all your funny stuff to the front #MSWL
