I would love to see diverse rep and marginalized authors play with their comfort tropes. Small towns, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, sports rivals, marriage of convenience. I don’t think tropes are ever overplayed, they just need a great hook and a great sense of craft

Adult: Narrative nonfiction/memoir about food, Southern culture, adventure, extreme sports, journeys, science/medicine, from perspectives we have not seen before/enough of & whose narratives tackle bigger-picture subjects alongside personal narratives.
bog bodies, the age of sail, westerns (centering BIPOC and/or queer characters only please), stories about sports teams (that are maybe haunted??), gothic romances, medieval pilgrimages and any combination thereof!
Olympic-related #MSWL: A reminder that that I'd love more narrative nonfic/memoir by athletes or about extreme sports. I'm obsessed with stories about what the human body is capable of. I recently watched the doc It's Easy Until It's Not—I'd love stories about events like this!
Amanda Rutter @ALRutterWhen I was younger, I read Freya North's Cat, which was about a journalist covering the Tour de France. And Jilly Cooper's Riders featured the Olympic show jumping. Fiona Walker's French Relations/Well Groomed shows Badminton Horse Trials.
Give me more recs like this!
Plus, if you can bear the thought of partnering with an agent who would have to start contacts from nothing, then #MSWL on sporting bonkbusters. Extra credit if they're a) an unusual sport and b) queer!
The Olympics have reminded me. I always want GIRLS in sports. Especially in #MG. #YA okay too. Wacky teams are even better, like "the Breakaways". Maybe the kid isn't "good" but really likes it anyway? Just spitballin'. #mswl
Thought of another one for the #MSWL: I'm always looking for memoir/narrative nonfic about extreme sports, athletes, & adventure (think ALONE ON THE WALL, BORN TO RUN). Brought to you by me going nuts over the Olympic trials (Sha'Carri Richardson!!!).
Relatedly, I would love a book on CTE and traumatic brain injury, contact sports, capitalism, identity, and culture from an expert on the subject and/or a contact sport athlete (I'm looking at you, #DerbyTwitter). #MSWL
Just another super FUN and funny day playing nine at Ben Browns, one of my favorite little courses in the world. Btw, looking for golf and sports books, too! #mswl #literaryagents #SaturdayThoughts #SundayMorning #weekendvibes #health #golflife #vaccination #COVID #outdoor
📚 More diverse, inclusive sport & competition stories! Send me entertaining stories that make palms sweat & hearts race & inspire us to get out & try something new. Underdog teams, determined solo athlete, and everything in between are fair game. So what counts? #MSWL
In adult nonfiction, I'm still looking for untold histories, memoirs with a big hook especially if they are extreme sports or adventure stories, pop science, cookbooks, & culinary histories. Again, send me your weirds.
