YA Magic Realism in its traditional meaning as a movement of Latin American fiction; here's a great article on the meaning of the genre as what Anna-Marie McLemore calls “a literary and cultural language," along with stellar examples #MSWL

Hey writers! As my QM page says, I’m closed to queries for the rest of the year, and aiming to respond to all queries within the next few weeks with a goal of opening up on January 4 (time and toddlers willing). So, what am I looking for in 2021? Here's a handy #MSWL thread:Jewish YA fantasy, from contemporary with “incidentally” Jewish characters to second-world fantasy with Judaism built into its bones. IN FACT, any ownvoices fantasy featuring or built around a minority religion (just, you know, be honest with yourself about what that means) #MSWL

4/ Only 26% of my list is KidLit of ANY kind. I'm super picky about what I take on, but I represent PB, chapter, MG, and YA, and would love to see more voicey, character-driven stories in all of these categories in my inbox in the new year.

let’s unpack why teenage girls ask the same questions academics do in more accessible terms and get dragged through the mud#mswl — this is everything I want in YA speculative fiction
also, perfect place to plug @ockaur’s forthcoming YA SF novel, RISE OF THE RED HAND, whose teen heroine asks alllll the uncomfortable questions about power and inequality—often with her fists 😉

Just learned there’s an apartment complex in Seoul specifically for Korean-Americans adoptees to return & connect with their culture/identity and I NEED THIS as an #ownvoices YA novel. Would consider based on sample chapters & work with you to develop it. #MSWL

I just realized something horrible. I bet a huge reason why so many people think this whole 'queer fad' is a new youth culture thing is because the generation of queers that would now be our parents age are dead.AIDS robbed us of queers who would now be in their mid 40s-50s.

A friend’s grandma got covid (she’s recovered)How did she get covid? She’s been sneaking off to karaoke bars that are covertly operating illegally, w/o covid precautions.
Illegal. Underground. Grandma. Karaoke Bars.
Am I disappointed? Amazed? Losing my mind? All of the above.
#MSWL for illegal underground Grandma karaoke bars in a YA cozy murder book.
