Dark fantasy or magical realism à la Pan’s Labryinth is another love of mine. I’ve been reading the novelization by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke, and it has that creepy, ethereal feel of magical realism and folklore mixed with a dash of horror. #MSWL Again YA/MG ONLY.

I want a YA that deals with weight in a real way. Body positivitiy, but also does acknowledge the feelings overweight girls get in this world. And I don't mind if it comes in a fantasy #MSWL

But not just ghost stories, but anything dark and creepy. I just watched We Have Always Lived in the Castle (which is fantastic, btw), so creepy/gothic with an unreliable narrator is a plus. #MSWL YA/MG only.

Skipping over to YA for the moment: A book that shines a light on rape culture and the injustices of it. It's not something to be
silent about, and yet with the consequences that can come along with it, so many people are.(Comp: SPEAK; EXIT, PURSUED BY A BEAR) #MSWL

#MSWL mermaids. But like, Thirteenth Year mermaids. And atmospheric mermaid lore. Can be YA or MG. But it is probably quiet, and emotionally fraught.

#MSWL YA or MG fantasy, sci-fi or realistic that deals with climate change.

I would love to see a YA (or upper MG) that focuses on the teen activist movement. Whether contemporary or historical, I want to see honest portrayals of how teens organize and mobilize. #MSWL

In kidlit more broadly (PB-YA) I am on the hunt for more NF that teaches and inspires in a fun accessible way. I lean towards non-fiction that focuses on a specific event or person, that really digs in to give us a clear picture as opposed to broad themes #MSWL

Horror & horror. All types & ages (mg, ya, adult). Could be super scary. Psychological. Thriller. Mystery. Warm Bodies-esque. Odd Thomas-esque. Any way you slice it. #MSWL

Happy #MSWL day! I just watched ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE on Netflix and would love to see a fun foodie #YA #ms like that which delivers big on ethnic flavors amidst a fun #RomCom setting. I’d also love to see more #NF or graphic NF aimed at middle graders!
