Like many of us in these strange times, I’ve been taking comfort in books. And it’s made me think of the kinds of stories I want to champion.

Most of this won’t be a surprise, but for what it’s worth, here’s my current #MSWL:

- high-concept, darkly comic modern fables with literary writing and crossover appeal like THE PISCES or GEEK LOVE
- eerie and atmospheric fantasies inspired by non-Western mythology
- sweet contemporary rom-coms about QPOC main characters

Trisha de Guzman @trishadeg · May 28

- contemporary stories that take a tongue-in-cheek approach to deconstructing toxic gender norms
- ripped-from-the headlines contemporary novels with literary writing and whipsmart sociopolitical commentary

CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP on my #mswl a #contemporary #fantasy #mg that gives me legit creeps. Monsters, ghosts, etc WELCOME

Trisha de Guzman @trishadeg · Apr 24

oh ALSO ALSO a take on metoo with a cheeky twist, preferably starting qpoc that examines the intersection of identifying with more than one marginalized group #ya #contemporary #mswl

Trisha de Guzman @trishadeg · Apr 24

ok here's another one: #mswl a sweet #contemporary #ya rom-com about a qpoc with an adorable meet-cute. I know this is super general but that's because I want so much of this!!

Trisha de Guzman @trishadeg · Apr 24

another #mswl: a home invasion story with a twist. but the "victim" is an action girl who ends up hunting THEM down because she is way better at surviving than they are #ya #contemporary this is basically the plot of the movie YOU'RE NEXT

Trisha de Guzman @trishadeg · Apr 24

#mswl #ya #ownvoices gimme all your monster books. Especially monsters based on non-western legends and folklore. The wendigo! Chupacabra! La llorona! I want to feel uncomfortable and scared and uncomfortably excited to be scared

Sony’s Stage 6 Films Plots Sequel To Sundance Sleeper ‘Searching’ starring a @CAAM favorite, John Cho.

In light of this amazing news, I'd love a gritty, contemporary YA thriller that, like the excellent film SEARCHING, utilizes the unique quirks and challenges that technology/social media have introduced into our lives #mswl

An end of day #MSWL: I would love middle grade or young adult novel that takes a no-holds-barred look at colorism in marginalized communities and the damage it does to the people in them. #YA #MG #Children

And I'm still anxiously awaiting a YA inspired by Onna-Bugeisha, the women samurai of feudal Japan ⚔️☠️🇯🇵 #MSWL #YA #Historical

Olivia Waite @O_Waite

Just an evening reminder that jewelry was a traditional gift demanded by women not because we’re frivolous magpies but because we weren’t permitted to have bank accounts in many times and places and needed shit we could sell for cash in a pinch.

Mind blown. Can someone please write a historical YA about a girl at the height of society who has, like, the BEST jewelry collection ever but is actually secretly hoarding jewelry so she can make her escape from the patriarchy?? #MSWL

just finished my second read of Madeline Miller's CIRCE and more than ever it's making me crave beautifully told coming of age stories of strong women coming into their power #MSWL #YA

Trisha de Guzman @trishadeg · 18 Jul 2018

Craving a Heathers-esque dark comedy with psychologically complex characters by an #ownvoices creator. #MSWL #YA

I've seen a couple mermaid mss in my inbox but I have yet to read one that leans into the monster angle—give me your vicious, gory, immoral mermaid stories please! #MSWL #YA
