So I mentioned wanting a fluffly YA rom-com. It is like the #1 thing I want right now. I am craving it like I crave pickles or guac. Think HOT DOG GIRL, or THE PRINCESS DIAIRIES, or ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS. Just fun, squee emotions, and escapism. #MSWL
In light of my query 0, I am going to do a #MSWL tomorrow. For now, here is a snapshot:
-Fluffy YA rom-com.
-Well-written psychological friendship book (YA)
- Literary-esque but cinematic fantasy YA and MG
- Historical Fiction like @RutaSepetys
- Quirky, Fun, Voicey MG
I’m focusing a lot in Adult as well—women’s fiction, fantasy, and historical. With WF I want to see upmarket book club fiction (ELEANOR OLIPHANT) and romcoms (MEET CUTE). I want lyrical, historically-inspired fantasy (EMPIRE OF SAND, Juliet Marillier, anything witches). #mswl
YA romcoms are my jam. Always have been. I want to see more STEM, fun jobs, and unique hobbies. DON’T DATE ROSA SANTOS, WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, ROYALS, and ALEX, APPROXIMATELY are perfect examples of voice, humor, and substance in contemp YA romcoms! #mswl
Peter Knapp @petejknappI am always on the look out for a smart, funny YA rom-com, with heart and preferably some type of strong hook. Also just an incisive love story a la THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR. I love love! #mswl
Side note: THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR is one of my favs because it has so much heart, but also such a wide canvas. It's structurally ambitious with its interstitial chapters. It takes on a huge topic but is also ridiculously intimate in its portrait of two families. LOVE. #mswl
I'm also looking for accessible historical fiction with a great hook. I'm a big rom-com fan (in teen + adult), but my bar is very high thanks to my brilliant authors, who are pubbing some of the best in the game (if I can just brag on them a bit!).
I'm starting to catch up on my submissions. I've answered all queries and have read all submissions sent before January 15th. To celebrate, I'm reposting my pretty #MSWL pic.
Watched #ThePerfectDate yesterday and now I want a YA romcom based on a relationship where one person is paid for platonic lessons on how to not be awkward/how to talk on a date but then THEY fall in love. Like Hitch, but Will Smith and Kevin James fall in love instead #mswl
I’d also love to find some hooky YA contemporary! In addition to my dream of finding a Jewish rom-com, I’ve also loved reads like Fangirl, Geekerella, and Simon Vs. with fully realized characters and fun hooks (themes of nerd/pop/fandom culture always interests me, too!). #MSWL
Firstly, I'm really eager to find more Jewish voices, across categories & genres. I have a stronger interest in contemporary (for YA, rom-coms included!) or sci-fi/fantasy stories that features Jewish characters. I've found I'm not usually the right person for historical. #MSWL
Book twitter! I'm looking at my list for 2020 and I'd LOVEEEE a fluffy, happy, fun, winter-y (holiday?!?) romantic comedy by an author of color, featuring main characters of color! If you are writing this now... please send it to me at @avonbooks!!! #mswl #romancelandia
Really enjoyed ONE DAY IN DECEMBER. Would LOVE to find a project in that vein. Just a sweet rom-com that completely pulls you in. Especially one that features a diverse cast &/or is centered around a holiday/tradition other than Xmas. #MSWL #A #WF #R
I’m still looking for my online dating rom-com! I NEED it! Who has one? It could be friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, comedic failure, I really don’t care. It just needs the hilarious reality of online dating and how horrendous it is! But of course, with a happy ending! #MSWL
“Commercial Fiction and Rom Coms: (especially with a diverse cast!) like AYESHA AT LAST, JANE THE VIRGIN, ONE DAY IN DECEMBER, THE PROPOSAL, and Elin Hilderbrand. I need a very strong hook.” @carlywatters #MSWL psliterary.com/submissions/
