In MG, my list is fantasy-heavy, and, like, don't stop sending me MG fantasy because I love it--but I want to see more MG contemporary! Particularly one that will make me ugly cry on the train, and then carefully glue my heart back together. #MSWL
YA fantasy is evergreen, but what I want to see is where the genre is going next. A more contemporary direction, a new take on paranormal, twists and turns on some heavy-hitting elements like dragons, gods, monsters, the nature of story? Bring it to me!! #MSWL
A few other things I'd love to see in my inbox...
*MG novel that revolves around a big family (traditional or untrad) and plays with form the way Jane the Virgin did
*YA novel about a young tennis phenom (like Coco Gauff!)
*Subversive takes on tropes
Hi, #MSWL Day! Agents, as many of you know, I'm acquiring a range of YA and MG (open to fiction, narrative nonfiction, and graphic novels), and I'm still looking for a lot of the things I've tweeted about on this hashtag in the past! twitter.com/search?q=(%23M…
All right, y'all ready for my #MSWL Day collection of oddities? Cause it's coming at ya (all #YA and #MG):
- Recreational fighting, both combat and noncombat (MMA, kick/boxing, karate, fencing, weapon work, etc.)
- Girl gamers
Martha Mihalick @MarthaMihalickYou know who I would like to meet in my inbox? The modern-day equivalent of the Quimby family. Where do they live? What do they look like? What conflicts are they facing? That's for you mg writers out there to imagine! #MSWL
Reupping this for today! #MSWL
I also would love some stories about nonbinary characters, in whatever way they come. But I'd REALLY love if they were just existing and had normal problems like acne and what hairstyle to wear to prom. Normal teenage stuff please #MSWL #YA
And my incredibly specific #MSWL: I would love to see a middle grade adventure that pulls off the tone, historical tie-ins, friendship drama, mystery, and overall excitement/escalation of NATIONAL TREASURE.
I would really love a YA exploring online friendship. There are great aspects, and also a lot of complications. I’m talking strictly platonic here. I met my best friend on the Jonas brothers fan club so online friendship has a special place in my heart. #mswl
