The New Yorker @NewYorker“We really wanted to make the teen film to end all teen films,” Winona Ryder said, of “Heathers.” Instead of putting an end to the genre, though, “Heathers” gave it a new life: nyer.cm/wCvC0hX pic.twitter.com/W4bg0Alszy
I would love to find Heathers in my inbox. I have a thing for bad boyfriends. #MSWL
(In fact, I had a dream last night I was back together with the baddest of my bad boyfriends, and even though I knew better, I still couldn't resist him.)
Sarah J. Sover @SarahJSover@UweStenderPhD Thank you for these! Will an agent who signs an author for a novel sometimes be willing to handle the sub-rights of a previous novel that was published with a small pub?
Arie Veira @arieXeira@UweStenderPhD How much does a (lack of) publishing history matter? Novelists who don't write short fiction or poetry are hard pressed to do the slow-small-steady build towards publishing. Does a strong MS trump a zero pub history?
Yes, 100% for me.
J.Lee Dodson is Writing His First Novel @JLeeDodson@UweStenderPhD I'm currently working on my first MG fantasy novel. I would like to begin work on a new book, however, I'm torn between a new MG novel or a YA horror novel. Questions are: Should I invest in a new MG( back pocket MS) or try another genre? Do you see horror making a comeback?
My advice might not be helpful to you, but I will tell you what I tell my clients: "write what you are compelled to write, don't write for trends."
HL Hinkle🍳 @TheComingOfGose@UweStenderPhD Hi! What's your typical request rate (per 1000 queries received, say)? Are you super selective up front or do you roll the dice a lot?
I am very selective, but...good question! I don't keep stats, but my gut feeling....Hmmm, I may request somewhere between 15 to 50 manuscripts per thousand queries.
21timetraveler @21timetraveler@UweStenderPhD Why might an agent request a partial instead of a full?
I don't know. You're asking the wrong person. If *I* am interested in something, I request the full. Maybe it comes from the time when there was no email to avoid printing and receiving all the paper?!? It's email, if I like it, I read on, if I don't, I pass, why not the full?!?
Jamir @jjexists@UweStenderPhD Hello! My full YA contemporary manuscripts tend to be kind of slim. (Around 40-50k). Is this an ok word count to send an agent for possible representation?
I guess it all depends on how great the writing, the plot, the story is. However, it DOES seem a bit short to me. Try, and see what happens.
