Oh, and I have a soft spot for Southern Gothic. Especially from/about POC. And I don’t mean just tossing a side character who practices hoodoo/voodoo into a mostly white story. *side eyes Hollywood* #MSWL YA/MG

Lastly (I think), ghost stories, for MG/YA/adult. Did anyone out there also grow up with Kathryn Tucker Windham's Jeffrey books? Give me ghost stories for people who grew up loving the Jeffrey books. #MSWL

#MSWL These are the kinds of details that build a convincing, contemporary YA world. Teens are intertwined with digital communication, and they're secretive, which means they're going to figure this shit out on their own. So much to mine! Write it true. twitter.com/rachsyme/statu…When you're writing YA, consider how teens ACTUALLY communicate and use technology! Please! #MSWL

YA true crime. Not sure what it would look like, but I want it. #MSWL

I want to see YA or adult horror/spec fic that's deeply rooted in character (We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Baby Teeth). A lyrical spec fic like The Dreamers. I am forever dying for something you could comp to Never Let Me Go. #MSWL

Hopping on the #MSWL train to say send me all of your atmospheric YA escapism projects!!

Dark fantasy or magical realism à la Pan’s Labryinth is another love of mine. I’ve been reading the novelization by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke, and it has that creepy, ethereal feel of magical realism and folklore mixed with a dash of horror. #MSWL Again YA/MG ONLY.

I want a YA that deals with weight in a real way. Body positivitiy, but also does acknowledge the feelings overweight girls get in this world. And I don't mind if it comes in a fantasy #MSWL

Always a sucker for misfit groups in MG or YA. Think ride or die friends, friends who are together because they're all they have, people pushed into situations where they realize, hey, we actually need each other.

If you comp Stranger Things, I may die.

But not just ghost stories, but anything dark and creepy. I just watched We Have Always Lived in the Castle (which is fantastic, btw), so creepy/gothic with an unreliable narrator is a plus. #MSWL YA/MG only.

I'm still building my MG list. Send me your MG projects!!! I'm also looking for YA contemporary, especially #OwnVoices and/or #diversity. And I really, really want more adult thrillers, horror, rom-coms, and contemporary romances. #MSWL 2/2 #writingcommunity #amquerying

#MSWL mermaids. But like, Thirteenth Year mermaids. And atmospheric mermaid lore. Can be YA or MG. But it is probably quiet, and emotionally fraught.

#MSWL YA or MG fantasy, sci-fi or realistic that deals with climate change.

I would love to see a YA (or upper MG) that focuses on the teen activist movement. Whether contemporary or historical, I want to see honest portrayals of how teens organize and mobilize. #MSWL

In kidlit more broadly (PB-YA) I am on the hunt for more NF that teaches and inspires in a fun accessible way. I lean towards non-fiction that focuses on a specific event or person, that really digs in to give us a clear picture as opposed to broad themes #MSWL
