SPECULATIVE—I’d love to find adult fiction with light touches of magic such as magical realism, cozy fantasy, or magic-tinged rom coms. THE INHERITANCE OF ORQUÍDEA DIVINA, THE VERY SECRET SOCIETY OF IRREGULAR WITCHES, THE EX HEX, and EMILY WILDE’S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FAERIES. #MSWL

I’m going to post a more detailed #MSWL thread soon, but in the meantime—here’s a big picture overview of what I’m looking for this year! ✨

Literary Agent
Upmarket Fiction that has a dark and/or speculative edge,
bookclub fiction that doesn't center white women,
LGBTQ+ history,
speculative fiction about the Tsunami spirits in Ishinomaki, focusing on collective healing (the ghost taxis especially usatoday.com/story/news/wor…)

YA:
- BIPOC and queer romcoms with depth and heart!!!!
- Speculative thrillers
- Contemporary, literary stories, with hints of magical realism

Literary Agent
Speculative/spooky/strange fiction: Think Julia Armfield, Mona Awad, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ling Ma, and Carmen Maria Machado

#MSWL While I’ll rep any genre, I am particularly drawn to fantasy, speculative, magical realism, and fabulism. I love stories that marry a fast paced plot with literary writing and strong emotions (who doesn’t, I know, sorry). A great mystery also always gets my attention.

Literary Agent
Those are the main things I can think of right now but I'm always up for weird plots/settings, character driven books, queer rep, dark academia, and speculative elements.

Literary Agent
Stories with the entrenched characters arcs, cults, unreliable narrators, eeriness, and survival component of Yellowjackets. I am OBSESSED with this show to say the least and would love to see these elements in the YA thriller/horror space or the adult speculative space.

The @TheTobiasAgency #mswl day is over, but I wanted to clarify: When I say I want anything under the SFF umbrella, most people know I mean fantasy and sci-fi but they don't realize I also want things that are other genres (mystery esp) with a speculative twist!

Literary Agent
This is vague, I know, but since it's #mswl day at @TheTobiasAgency, I would love to find a SFF/speculative in adult or ya that is weird but captivating. A little bit of "I have no idea what's going on but I am into it."

Editor
I'm open to books set mostly in the real world, but that have speculative elements that help tell stories in interesting ways. I'm also looking for some upmarket fiction and short stories! Similar themes/ideas as in Lit Fic 6/10

Literary Assistant
honestly? #mswl for a grounded/speculative story featuring an Ellen Ripley-esque character at its heart: a working mother (in this house Alien: Isolation *is* canon, tyvm), full of grit and tenacity, *excellent* at her job, no romantic ties to speak of, a utility-fashion icon,,,

Literary Agent
I updated a #MSWL one-sheet for January '23, plus I'll keep tweeting and evolving like the book gremlin I am!
Also, credit to Inkyard Press for the idea of using scales to help capture vibes ::gestures to self::

Literary Agent
Upmarket speculative fiction. Grounded fantasy, magical realism, retellings of fairy/folk tales, horror. The majority of my favourite books of all time live in this genre. #MSWL

Literary Agent
I'd like a little bit of horror, too. It needs to be something speculative - no thrillers please! Think supernatural/cosmic horror.

Literary Agent
I am always looking for adult and YA SFF! That includes pretty much any speculative fiction you can think of, although I prefer my sci-fi on the heavier side. (So not really near-future stuff that's "just" dystopian without awesome tech etc.)

Literary Agent
I can’t get enough of: family sagas, female friendships, edgy psychological suspense, closed-setting novels, anti-heroines, smart romances, comedy of manners, found family, genre-blend romcoms, and change-one-thing-in-our-world speculative fiction.

Editor
⭐️Thrillers, psychological horror, supernatural, mystery, and speculative fiction that radically represents and explores queer, female, and BIPOC rage, revenge, and reclamation of power (think Elatsoe, Iron Widow, Sadie)

I want a Knives out/Glass Onion YA level mystery so badly #MSWL twitter.com/Screenplayed/s…Same but it could be ya or adult speculative for me #mswl
