James McGowan @jmcgowanbks
I missed participating in the @bookendslit #MSWL Day round up due to meetings, but behold my #MSWL anyway... (1/5)James is seeking upmarket/book club fiction, mystery, suspense and thrillers. Some things he is drawn to in a novel are commercial, high-concept plots, exciting settings, fast pacing, a fresh spin on a familiar trope, grounded speculative elements, rich prose (2/5) #MSWL

Happy #MSWL day! You can see my wishlist here: manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/sara… I'm looking for all MG and YA fiction (except graphic novels), adult romance, and adult anything-under-speculative-umbrella except hardcore horror #mg #ya #sff

My full #mswl can be found on the agency website but here’s what I’m especially looking for in 2023:
—Adult + YA RomCom that are FUNNY AF *or/and* Adult Romance w a magic/spec twist
—Suspense/Thrillers (we need more queer and POC rep in this category!)
—MG Fantasy! All kinds!

Oh hey it's #MSWL day! Here's a link to my new shiny page. TLDR: I want adult fiction that stretches my imagination, and connects me back to big chewy ideas in the real world. Fresh speculative fiction, philosophical SFFH, ambitious satires.

#MSWL: Light paranormal romance, especially paranormal romantic comedy
Gothic romance/Gothic fiction
Uplit, feel-good women’s fiction, especially with speculative elements
Dark/darkly funny women’s fiction and romantic comedy (think Love in the Time of Serial Killers)
Literary Agent
I still have a handful of older queries and submissions to read, but I'm officially open to queries again! Looking for crossover speculative fiction, thrillers and horror with speculative elements, and 2SLGBTQIA+ picture books from authors or author/illustrators! #MSWL

Fiction #mswl
For commercial fiction I liked BEACH READ, ONE TO WATCH. I want the genre to feel subverted in someway. A new hook.
I'm OK with lightly speculative fiction too like THIS TIME TOMORROW or THE TWELVE LIVES OF SAMUEL HAWLEY
Literary Agent
#MSWL Give me more speculative, weird stories about living in and around the ocean.

#MSWL DAY! February 16th. All day long! pic.twitter.com/2dUZ57wMt2I've updated my #MSWL page for their great new platform and look forward to queries - especially if it's a multicultural love story, a
BIPOC perspective on history (fiction or nonfiction), a thriller in an unusual time and place...
Happy #MSWL Day! 👇🤗 manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/Jess…

The updated Manuscript Wishlist website looks wonderful - what a great resource. As always, my #MSWL is broad - a multi-generational family saga; speculative; something escapist/hopeful. My full #MSWL is here: manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/cath…

In contemp fantasy I am looking for hooky, fresh premises like IF YOU COULD SEE THE SUN & LEGENDBORN in YA, and on the adult side, speculative thrillers like NINTH HOUSE, BLACK WATER SISTER, and MAGIC FOR LIARS.
Literary Agent
Dark speculative work. Thrillers. Academies. Murder mysteries. Occult studies. Haunted museums. Gothic mansions. An atmosphere to fall in love with opulent richness of the dark.

SPECULATIVE—I’d love to find adult fiction with light touches of magic such as magical realism, cozy fantasy, or magic-tinged rom coms. THE INHERITANCE OF ORQUÍDEA DIVINA, THE VERY SECRET SOCIETY OF IRREGULAR WITCHES, THE EX HEX, and EMILY WILDE’S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FAERIES. #MSWL

I’m going to post a more detailed #MSWL thread soon, but in the meantime—here’s a big picture overview of what I’m looking for this year! ✨
Literary Agent
Upmarket Fiction that has a dark and/or speculative edge,
bookclub fiction that doesn't center white women,
LGBTQ+ history,

- BIPOC and queer romcoms with depth and heart!!!!
- Speculative thrillers
- Contemporary, literary stories, with hints of magical realism
Literary Agent

#MSWL While I’ll rep any genre, I am particularly drawn to fantasy, speculative, magical realism, and fabulism. I love stories that marry a fast paced plot with literary writing and strong emotions (who doesn’t, I know, sorry). A great mystery also always gets my attention.

Those are the main things I can think of right now but I'm always up for weird plots/settings, character driven books, queer rep, dark academia, and speculative elements.
Literary Agent
Stories with the entrenched characters arcs, cults, unreliable narrators, eeriness, and survival component of Yellowjackets. I am OBSESSED with this show to say the least and would love to see these elements in the YA thriller/horror space or the adult speculative space.
