For a long time now I've been looking for a contemporary romance in which an only child/lonely person is welcomed into a huge, sprawling, loving family. Think While You Were Sleeping. (We're looking now for romances for 2020's holiday season, hint hint.) #MSWL
Natascha Morris @SoCalledYALife#MSWL I need a good romance. I love falling in love with people falling in love. It doesn't have to be gooey, it can be enemies to lovers, "Fake dating", etc. But I want romance.
Tones I like:
-this creepy but strangely magnetic
-oh so this is what dissociation feels like
-you could totally turn this into poetry if you wanted to
-so nerdy I can't stand it
-omg this is so cute only dogs can hear my squee
Characters I like:
-bad choices, heart of gold
-i know they're bad, but maybe they can change?
-grumpy but cares SO MUCH
-watch out, they've got jokes!
-deeply enthused about something literally no one else cares about
Dr. Uwe Stender @UweStenderPhDDeliver me LGBT+ YA stories that leave the reader joyful. Plots that are fun, invigorating, and clever. I'd love to read an LGBT love or friendship story that's incredibly well written and makes me feel HAPPY afterward. #MSWL
One regret as an editor is that I never had my "kid and their dog" story. It doesn't have to be a dog... but the sensibility of an animal teaching a MG character to better understand Big Truths in a bring-your-tissues kind of read is so satisfying! #MSWL
Romance tropes I like (LGBTQ+)
-we're queer and no one in this book is homophobic!
-enemies to lovers
-o no there's only one bed
-I thought I liked my BFF's SO but maybe I just love my BFF?
-any and all types of bisexual panic
Kiki Nguyen @kiananguFirst on my #mswl: I want an f/f YA contemporary centering a black girl or girl of color who isn't confused about anything other than How To Get The Girl. A 2015-now voice.
Katelyn Detweiler @katedetweileri'm also here for smart rom coms and women's fiction, bright and joyful and swoony and fresh. unexpected love that comes in all shapes and sizes. real people, real dilemmas, real dreams. i just devoured RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE and oh my god, yes, everything about that book. #MSWL
Also, for the love of everything that’s holy, do not send me interracial friendship/romance narratives that overcome racism. That shit is played out and wack. Stories with characters and worlds navigating racism, homophobia, etc yes. The Help type shit? NO. Anti #mswl
Before I forget! I love historical romance, historical fantasies, alternate historical fantasies etc etc in YA and Adult. I’d LOVE an f/f in a period story! Like duchess debauchery or some shit. With WOC!!! Bc racism is a recent phenomenon. #mswl
