Elana Roth Parker @ElanaRothTruth: I'm struggling with dystopian fiction in my submissions. The kids these days seem to want it. But I feel like my entire early agenting career was dystopian. (I sold...quite a few.) I'm not against it, but I'm also not sure what new avenues would be interesting to me.
Honestly the more I think about it, the more I'd like a genre within genre. Like a rom-com set in a dystopian future (🤯). Or a murder mystery. That would be more interesting to me than "teen takes down oppressive futuristic system."
My bookshelf is 50% character-driven sff/speculative/spooky, 50% realistic contemporary/historical (coming-of-age romance, mystery/thriller, action-adventure, and verse novels), mostly by BIPOC, queer, or traditionally underrepresented folks, & my taste very much reflects that.
#MSWL Agents, I've been seeing some fantastic YA sff subs. I'll never say no to sff that captures my heart, but I'm also on the lookout for gorgeously written verse/prose, layered coming-of-age (historical or contemp) esp if it weaves in queer romance and/or mystery/suspense.
Novelists of Twitter (I refuse the other name): where is the RushTok romance we all need? Or…a mystery? Pls hmu with this important literary contribution. And also note I was in charge of recruitment for all sororities at my college so I mean business. #mswl
I have a YA-shaped hole in my heart... so would love to see more YA in my queries! #mswl
✨dark, sweeping, and utterly irresistible speculative novels
✨non-Western centric narratives
✨elements of thriller/mystery/suspense
✨will never say no to magic!
"I'm on the lookout for mystery thrillers that explore a 'true crime' in their fictional world. Who does it impact, and how? What is justice? Think A GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO MURDER, NOTHING CAN HURT YOU, MY FLAWLESS LIFE, and JACKAL."
YA: coming of age romance like Last Night at the Telegraph Club or Ari & Dante w/gorgeous prose; coming of gender; atmospheric gothic (like The Handmaiden); historical/nf; mystery/thrillers like Firekeeper's Daughter or Patron Saints of Nothing; character-driven speculative. 4/6
Mystery! I still would love to see if anyone has written a Living Single/Golden Girls with a dead body.
Something outside of the Law & Order procedural (even though I'm a fan).
I'm open to speculative elements in this genre as well.
Book with series potential that follow a play pattern, i.e. a format to follow with the story and remain invested: shipping wars, districts/factions/houses, mysteries, patterns that serve as a through line for the book, a calling card
An LGBTQ+ protagonist and a thrilling twist?

"I'm looking for cozy mysteries with younger protagonists, geared towards millennial audiences. I'd love to see a wider range of settings and premises for series, so if you have something that's unique, send it over!" @claire_m_harris #MSWL
