New year, time to share a new #MSWL thread of things I’d love to see this year.

I am actively looking for: Adult, YA & MG.

And I am eager to support commercial and high stakes stories featuring BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disability, and neurodiversity representation.

Stories about best friends set against the backdrop of competitive, high-stakes, art-based industries: this is what I live for! Think THE BALLERINAS by Rachel Kapelke-Dale and SMILE AND LOOK PRETTY by Amanda Pellegrino.

Grounded fantasy/ genre! I can read books like THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE, ADDIE LARUE, SERPENT & DOVE, or THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY again and again -- anything with a lush setting, a little (or a lot) of romance, and high stakes has my name all over it.

Presents that balance high stakes and high emotion with a touch of humour (not rom-coms though!)

On the speculative side of YA, give me a world or a circumstance I’ve never seen before. I love high-stakes, plot-driven fantasy and sci-fi, where the world enhances the story more than is the focus.

6) Competitions, tournaments, puzzles, and mysteries! Give me those sweet aha! moments and high stakes.

1) ROMANTIC AF fantasy (give! me! pining!) (also enemies to lovers, sword lesbians, star-crossed high stakes, we-can't-touch-'cause-we're-cursed, etc; love me a good fantasy-with-kissing tropefest)

For YA and MG genre, I love genre fiction with fast pacing and high stakes. I am generally not preferential to any specific genre as long as the rules of the genre are respected and understood.... #mswl

I prefer books with a fast pace, high stakes, and strong emotional development for the main character(s). I do not want to see books from authors writing identity based books not of their own identity. #mswl

I will never get bored with enemies-to-lovers or forced proximity romance tropes. Conflict must be high stakes. I want the tension between the couple to be off the charts. #mswl

I want both MG and YA paranormal. And while it doesn’t need to be paranormal romance, let’s be real: I love romance. I love love. So if you’re writing a paranormal romance with a sweeping, high stakes story, I’d love to take a look! #mswl

First and foremost: MIDDLE GRADE. I am extremely hungry for a big middle grade series with stellar world building, cool magic, and a strong emotional core. I love my middle grade with lots of heart that works hand-in-hand with the high stakes adventure. #mswl
