#MSWL day:

Things I'm craving when I'm open to #queries or subs from events are #YA that feel like a @thisissigrid or @maisiehpeters song - gritty, catchy, & oh-so-relatable, but w/ comic relief too - & a light-hearted, laugh-out-loud funny #MG a la Friday Barnes by @raspratt.

In YA contemporary, I love wit and charm & need to be laughing, even with stories that make me cry. Give me stories about the messy side of teenage life, in the vein of Netflix's SEX EDUCATION. I'm not the best fit for wholly issue-centric books.

I like my thrillers character-driven & atmospheric, like Courtney Summers in YA and Tana French in adult. Voicy YA mysteries with a classic whodunit feel like TRULY DEVIOUS & PREP SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL are also up my alley. I'm not a good fit for commercial action/adventure novels.

In contemp fantasy I am looking for hooky, fresh premises like IF YOU COULD SEE THE SUN & LEGENDBORN in YA, and on the adult side, speculative thrillers like NINTH HOUSE, BLACK WATER SISTER, and MAGIC FOR LIARS.

For YA fantasy, all of the above applies & I am super open to intricate worldbuilding. I love stories with strategists & characters and narratives that fool the reader: STRIKE THE ZITHER & LITTLE THIEVES are recent faves in this vein. Give me mystery too a la YEAR OF THE REAPER!

In both YA and Adult, I want these two buffoons. A political backdrop with extensive world building and incredible conflicts anchored by the hatred and love of two people who are somehow functioning when they should probably be dead

- Speculative thrillers
- Contemporary, literary stories, with hints of magical realism

-YA contemporary that brings ALL the emotions

I would also *love* to see a novel-in-verse in any genre!

-YA historical that features underrepresented experiences/time periods
-Unsettling YA horror/thrillers, especially with unreliable narrators
-YA high fantasy with innovative or unusual magic systems
-YA sci-fi, especially if it crosses genres (sci-fi horror/thriller/mystery)
