Humor

So, time for another #MSWL, in the run-up to tomorrow's #askUpstart session. HUMOR, people! I love books that make me laugh, in every category; PB, CB, MG, YA. Here's a couple reasons why:

Life is messy, and nothing is colored in the lines. It's often in a dark moment that things feel funniest. I like books that capture the messy complexity of life, including how humor crops up. #MSWL

Okee dokee—the time has come to reopen to queries. (Hooray!) Since round numbers are nice, let’s say I’ll reopen on August 1st! Here's some stuff that I'd especially be excited to see in my inbox. #mswl

Picture books from author/illustrators (correct): modern art styles, whimsical-with-heart stories, light humor, and simple prose. Would love books that comp to MAX THE BRAVE, WE FOUND A HAT, and Emma Dodd. +100 for women and POC author/illustrators. #mswl #pb #Illustrator

Submission Call: Mysteries featuring unreliable narrators (but more "Night Film" than "Gone Girl"), scavenger hunt/codes/clue-laden narratives, the same mix of humor/darkness and awesome ladies at work as Killing Eve #MSWL #submissions #mysteries #thrillers #YA

Lynnette Novak @Lynnette_Novak · 18 May 2018

I'd like to see more cozy mysteries in my box, especially if you have a humorous voice & a fresh hook (no knitting, bookstores, etc.). Anyone have a cozy with a LGBTQ couple who solves the mystery? *grabby hands* #MSWL

Can I just have a deadpool-like character in a sci-fi or fantasy? Please? It can be YA! I just need this type of humor in my life. #mswl

Submissions call: Seeking romances that feature gender role reversals, competent and confident heroines, humorous beta heroes, and feminist themes #MSWL

Laura Crockett @LECrockett · 7 May 2018

I'm seeking more contemporary and historical lately––with accessible voices, character-driven plot, heart, humor, family/friendship/sibling relationships at the center. #mswl scribblesandwanderlust.wordpress.com/2018/01/01/msw…

#MSWL I am in need of more Middle Grade MG queries in my QueryManager! Send me ridiculous, send me adventure, send me fantasy, send me LGBTQ+ protags and family dynamics, BFFs and boisterous ensembles, stories with purpose, depth, and humor! #querytip #amquerying #amwriting

Joanna MacKenzie @joannamackenzie · 27 Apr 2018

I'd love to see a novel featuring Sara Paulson's character from Ocean's 8 - a mom with a secret or secret life, with a perfect mix of humor and heart. #MSWL

These elements can include character, theme, atmosphere, grit, style, voice, setting, world building.....any craft element that you want to highlight.

For example, "My story combines the humor of Shannon Hale's Austenland with the heart and action of Kenneth Oppel's Airborn in this MG role playing adventure gone wrong" (#MSWL, btw)

beth phelan @beth_phelan · 16 Apr 2018

I would also like to see some heart-achey MG contemporary that doesn’t shy away from big issues. Socially and politically engaged, with humor and joy and hope but also courage and realness and empathy. #MSWL

Rachel Brooks @RachMBrooks · 14 Apr 2018

I love a cozy with humor or snark. Cozies, despite the murder and criminals, are not dark, and I want to feel like I can follow this fun sleuth and their voice for many books to come. #MSWL

Kaitlyn Johnson @kaitylynne13 · 4 Apr 2018

#MSWL any age/genre with humor like Buffy, Firefly, or Psych. I like it sassy, and I like it clever.
