YA Friendship stories. Girls supporting girls without competition, judgement, or stereotypical high school jealousy (I'm tired of seeing the cliche mean cheerleaders). I'm still buds with all my high school girlfriends. I'd love to see more of this in YA #mswl #YAlit
#MSWL Lightning Round:
--MG with a unique hook and a focus on friendship
--f/f YA that explores the lines between friendship and romance
--Adult psychological thriller that *isn't* about a woman who might be crazy/imagining the whole thing
--Adult SFF that makes me cry
I love laughter, warmth, introverts, character-driven narratives, perseverance, being transported to different places and times, gorgeous and grounded world-building, heart, friendship, and family.
Here’s what I’m seeking this year! #mswl scribblesandwanderlust.com/2019/01/01/msw…
2/4 #MSWL Picture books: fiction-only; character-driven humor; quirky & well-developed characters; strong narrative; motivated page turn; heartwarming (but not suffocating); community; identity; friendship; self-esteem; LGBTQ; diverse families and ownvoices; author-illustrators.
Chelsey Emmelhainz @CKEmmelhainzMy current #MSWL:
- toxic female friendships
- spooky suspense (maybe w/ supernatural/horror bent)
- suspense featuring cults and witches (a la, THE CRAFT)
- family dysfunction + messed up secrets
- female serial killers
It appears my #MSWL list is evergreen, because I'm definitely still hunting for all these elements in my mystery/suspense/women's fiction submissions...

How many times have I watched this video?
So many times.
Can someone please write me a YA with this level of friendship and support between teammates?
Sarah Walton @noegopictures@d_annouche @Donovanesque Hi Stacey, @Donovanesque In regard to setting of the novel, I know that Hallmark traditionally prefers for a character to travel from a big city to a small town for Christmas, but is it okay for the protagonist to travel from one big city to another big city?
GREAT question. Characters can go to a big city, or stay in their big city or small town. The important thing here is the emotional journey and re-connecting to the things that matter most: like community, love, friendship, family, hope, or their truest self. #hallmark #MSWL
9/ #MSWL: Middle-grade and YA graphic novels about identity, particularly coming-of-age stories that explore relationships and friendships with emotional depth. Books like This One Summer, Real Friends, and American Born Chinese.
4/ #MSWL: I would love to find more MG fantasy that combines commercial, high concept plotting with gorgeous prose. Books packed with action, adventure, heart, & friendship that tow the line between literary and commercial. Wildly original worldbuilding, always!
Peter Knapp @petejknapp#mswl 2019: Sweet, smart YA contemporary love stories: think TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE, WHAT IF IT’S US, SIMON VS., EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU, etc. (3/13)
...but also anti-love stories, break-up stories, friendship break-up stories. Give me all the explorations of relationships of all types, please! #mswl
“Commercial “Millennial” novels: i.e. STARTUP, THE HATING GAME, THE ASSISTANTS, THE KNOCKOFF, THE REGULARS. Starting careers, moving to new cities, friendships etc.” @carlywatters #MSWL psliterary.com/submissions/
#mswl: historical (1900s), romcom, immigrant stories, diverse voices, high society, light suspense or speculative hook, campus setting, southern, complex female friendships, family dramas, gothic, nostalgia. Upmarket with commercial hook. Agented only.
My number one wish list item right now is heartfelt, voice- and relationship-driven contemporary MG. Recent faves like IVY ABERDEEN, LOVE LIKE SKY, and FRONT DESK gave me families, friendships, and crushes that felt achingly, oh so real. If you have it, I want it! 😊 #MSWL
Erika W. Smith @erikawynnhow would you describe this genre of books because I love it: the Secret History, A Little Life, Brideshead Revisited, Special Topics In Calamity Physics. Books about beautiful smart pretentious way-too-close school friends who are surrounded by sexual tension, money, and death?
This genre is 🙌 and a perpetual #MSWL
