✨Dark academia w/ high personal stakes and rich settings
✨Asian-inspired SF/tech-fantasy crossover in the vein of Xiran Jay Zhao.
✨Fantasy inspired by South Asian and Middle Eastern cultures and mythologies
✨Aro-ace rep and meaningful platonic relationships
✨Fantasy or SF with non-western settings and cultures
✨Anti-colonialist, -caste, -patriarchy, -establishment, etc. with driving plots and strong characters
In speculative fiction (light sci-fi, horror, fantasy), I need worlds that I can settle into easily.
Fresh takes on classic tropes, dynamic characters, unique magic systems, atmospheric writing & undeniably high stakes ✨Think: R.F. Kuang, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Rory Power
Romance has been such a joy to work on, so I’d love to see more! Especially in the YA space—think: Jenny Han, Sandhya Menon, Jason June & Adiba Jaigirdar ❤️🔥
And I will ALWAYS love a little bit of romance in my fantasy 🥰
Will never be sick of it, I swear.
I am open to queries. I repeat: I am open to queries.
What do I want? Who knows. I mean, I do know. Maybe some fae, some smutty fantasy romance, maybe some gay witches, I don’t know let’s also throw in a himbo or two.
I am open to queries.
That is all.
i would love to see:
✨ BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, neurodivergent, undocumented, historically excluded voices
✨ adult fiction set in latin america (esp brazil) across genre, own voices
✨ MG fantasy feat. non-western folklore and high personal stakes
It’s 2022! A reminder that I’m open to queries and looking for all sorts of MG and YA, contemporary and fantasy. I have high hopes of finding some great new clients this year. And I finally updated my page here: manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/beth… #mswl
I am eager for more high-concept sci-fi and fantasy with literary and upmarket feel. Examples of my favorites in this space include THE POWER by Naomi Alderman, THE AGE OF MIRACLES by Karen Thompson Walker, and THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern.
Grounded fantasy/ genre! I can read books like THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE, ADDIE LARUE, SERPENT & DOVE, or THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY again and again -- anything with a lush setting, a little (or a lot) of romance, and high stakes has my name all over it.
In Middle Grade, I'd love to see:
🧢Fantasy inspired by myths, folklore, or legends—especially if it's not European
🧢Historical that centers POC stories
🧢Contemporary with an environmental bent
🧢Horror with ghosts, creepy crawlies, and witches
🧢 Earth-based sci-fi
Now for some fun! A #MSWL 🧵
Let's start with MG and YA...
Other than YA Fantasy...I will be completely open to every genre in MG and YA for 2022!
**Fantasy writers...I do make special requests during pitch contests so keep an eye out for me lurking. Lol.
Looking for romantic YA fantasy! Give me stories that hinge on those relationships, the emotional nuance, where we’re in it for the tension and angst and the feels #MSWL
I also adore tropes. Enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, fake dating, slow burn... I’d love to see marginalized voice playing with these tropes in their books, especially YA fantasy (and romance of course)! #MSWL
- I’m looking for any and all kinds of fantasy, from grim dark to the lightest, fluffiest contemporary fantasy
- I’m looking for Gothic stories. I love the concept of monsters, the uncanny, the way it delves into the characters
- I’m also looking for supernatural #MSWL
* Positive female friendships—Give me girls supporting girls. Girls teaming up for the greater good. Girls who love their friends with their whole hearts.
* Underrepresented voices
* Fresh takes on fantasy
* Stories with a speculative twist
Kaitlyn Sedai 🌙 @BooksPlusWinegive me more fantasy books with protagonists in their 30s, 40s and 50s. I want the world weary knight who has back spasms and calf cramps. Give me more badass mothers with rich stories. I want to know how they pay their taxes and who checks in on their homes when adventuring.
