PB – I’m not really looking much for NF bios these days, as the market is so saturated, unless it somehow ties into present times (I am only looking for bios on women and/or underrepresented and diverse subjects). Author-illustrators always!

PB – I’m interested in holidays stories that feel unique from what’s already out there. I’m partial to Halloween, and books with a seasonal hook interest me.

PB – Stories with environmental tie-ins (I’m especially drawn to stories about protecting oceans and the animals that live there). I also am a fan of unlikely friendship stories, especially with two very different animals—I really enjoy the ones that are true stories especially!

Picture books – I have a full picture book list, so I'll be looking very selectively. I like humor, character-driven stories, inclusive stories, diverse representation, fiction with a fun educational aspect (i.e. A PLACE FOR PLUTO).

This year, I’ll be looking first for MG, then YA, then adult, then PB. My preference is for dark genre work (fantasy, horror, suspense) and rom-coms/lighter contemporary! I’m newly open to adult rom-coms after falling in love with a few last year. 😁

As stated on my #MSWL on the official MSWL website and the Metamorphosis website, as far as fantasy I’m really only looking for magical realism and urban fantasy. I prefer low fantasy and if it’s very high concept it’s probably not for me.

Romance—way more of it! Rom-Coms so funny that make me snort out my coffee, historicals with so much tension I want to pull my hair out, adventure/caper romance that takes me on a nailbiting ride or presents me with a mystery to solve. #MSWL

I am always looking for Picture Books (non-rhyming)! I tend to prefer funny stories and stories that focus on family, but I love a good unexpected narrator!

#MSWL a beautifully written PB/MG/YA touching upon and shedding light on Korean American history. Something like one of my favorite films, 말모이 Mal-Mo-E, weaving humor, nuanced characters, complicated family dynamics beating w/love, & a spirit of resistance against the odds.

--A Rom-Com+. A great romance with high quality writing and a meaningful B-plot, like Joya Goffney's EXCUSE ME WHILE I UGLY CRY. (or the romance could be the B plot)
--Sweeping, cinematic adventures with a fun romance

-- A younger school-based story, think Andrew Clements' work
--A story dealing with first crushes and heart breaks

I’ve been feeling survival horror in the vein of ALL THE WHITE SPACES. Give me isolation, hauntings, nature vs humanity, cli-fi, upmarket. Think EVENT HORIZON without the sci-fi. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is another good one. Also, horror from marginalized voices: #mswl

I'm also only considering memoir and sci-fi very selectively. I'm not the best fit for epic/high fantasy (think Game of Thrones) but I do like magical realism, urban fantasy and some paranormal and horror.

This is the first time I am open to Picture Books! I am selectively looking for: whimsical and funny stories, especially those that showcase diversity. Family and friendship themes are my favorite. It's a plus if you are an author/illustrator, but not a must.
