I will also add there is a tendency when looking at YA fantasy to over-simplify with "This fairy tale/classic re-telling is overdone" but when you look at it, it's all white/western retellings. I am 100% open to retellings from new perspectives. #MSWL #AskECLA

Historical fantasy! While the cozier, the better, I'm also looking for fantasies that sit in the upper YA/new adult space that are firmly historical and grounded. Think "The Last Magician" or "These Violent Delights"

Literary Agent
Low-key fantasy! Epic fantasies aren't for me right now, but I'm loving warm and cozy YA/new adult fantasies that don't break the mental bank. Think "The House in the Cerulean Sea" plus "The Ex Hex" - grounded, perhaps supernatural, and heavily dosed with romance!

Warm and cozy everything! Romances! Fantasy! Historical fiction! Anything that feels like curling up in Kate Winslet's cottage from The Holiday!

—Mystery and horror in certain genres (In mystery, think cozies or women’s fiction-adjacent, instead of hard-boiled detective stories; in horror, think Hill House, not Halloween).
—Character-driven sci-fi and fantasy. Send your sweeping, sexy Kushiel’s Dart-style epics, please!

Literary Agent
—Magic realism in its traditional meaning as a movement of Latin American and Caribbean or African fiction.
—Queer genre YA of any kind, especially from QBIPOC.
—Jewish fantasy, including second-world, or fantasy featuring or built around a minority religeon

Literary Agent
Otherwise in YA, I'm looking for:
—Contemp fiction with a fresh POV, gorgeous prose, and a strong hook
—Fantasy featuring diverse characters, mythologies, and beasties, from Baba Yaga to the Bái Zé; any creature that lives outside the mainstream and in the shadows

Kritika H. Rao (she/her) @KritikaHRao
Woke up and realized I didn't because it's not that kind of epic fantasy, no swords here, and felt a lot better until it hit me this is debut year and panicked for other reasons 🙃I love VERY DIFFERENT fantasy. The more genre-bending the better. Kritika's books blend epic fantasy (no swords!) with a touch of sci fi, STRONG sense of place, & strong contemporary relevance. If you're wondering what I mean by "very different fantasy" on #MSWL - add this TBR!

Okay but can we PLEASE make 'cosy fantasy' a thing like ASAP? Don't get me wrong, I love dark and twisty books, but sometimes I just want to lose myself in another world without having to wonder when my favourite character's gonna get stabbed in the face.

Hello, literary agents! It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, so here’s a thread of #MSWL requests, aka the submissions I want to see in my inbox:First off, work by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or disabled authors are always welcome in the genres I edit, which includes romance yes, but also mystery and thrillers, upmarket fiction, fiction with fantasy/sci-fi/ speculative elements that are mainstream crossovers, and nonfiction.
