What I want to see instead in romance submissions are characters who are intent on achieving some sort of goal, who are leading interesting lives that get knocked sideways by the love interest. #MSWL

Just finished THE FIVE by @HallieRubenhold—an incredibly thoughtful work of crime nonfiction. In a genre that elevates serial killers to celebrity, it’s imperative to recenter these narratives around the victims, whose lives are too often overshadowed and lost to history. #MSWL

So! In the #MSWL I’ve shared with agents, I include a section for ‘keywords.’ These are descriptive words that spark my interest immediately whenever I see them in fic pitches: dark, psychological, haunting, eerie, chilling, propulsive, disturbing, suspenseful. You get the idea.

Update: I was on a pleasure-reading spree last week, and the novels that held my attention was following a pattern, so I'll elaborate on what I love about #fiction in a few . . . Agents, I hope this will be helpful. #mswl #publishing
