On the lookout 👀 for some really compelling upmarket/literary horror, particularly in the #YA space. The kind you gobble down in one sitting because you’re so spooked! 😱 #amquerying #querytrenches #mswl

My 13-year-old brother has been cast in his school production of Mamma Mia. It’s him and 16 girls. He’s playing all three dads. I’m dead. This is hilarious. Will he switch back and forth between characters Jekyll & Hyde-style? Switch hats?
Also, this is totally the kind of story I’d add to my #mswl. I’m super picky about theater stories these days, but I love this idea.

In all the endless breathless fictionalized takes on Jack the Ripper, have we ever done the one where the reason he disappeared was because a team of vengeful Victorian sex workers systematically hunted him down, took him out and dumped his body in the Thames?

A hook hooks the reader, sometimes it's a way to distinguish the cover, sometimes it just grabs readers. A family quarantined for seven days together is a great hook SEVEN DAYS OF US. A husband who sells a house while his wife is away is great--OUR HOUSE #MSWLA mother who, in her will, leaves the stipulation that her daughter must complete a life list before receiving her inheritance--THE LIFE LIST. These are a few examples of big hooks from books I read this year. #MSWL

This is such an industry term though & I'm aware that those new to publishing, author or otherwise, don't always have a grasp of what is meant by that, or how big a hook really needs to be. #amwritingA hook hooks the reader, sometimes it's a way to distinguish the cover, sometimes it just grabs readers. I'm not saying you have to re-write this story into an HEA. I'm saying you can.
I have never wanted a #mswl more in my professional life.
