This has been a heavy week for the passing of influential people, and certainly retrospectives on either Barbara Walters' or Vivienne Westwood's work are at the top of my 2023 #MSWL. Their accomplishments should be honoured, critiqued, and memorialized.

For the new year, in addition to my forever #MSWL on the ArtHouse page, in 2023, Iβm looking for some specifics!!:
- picture book nonfiction
- narrative nonfiction/memoirs (think MAID)
- middle grade National Treasure with non-founding father artifacts
- adult Black romance

Just finished "Some Kind of Hate" by @SarahDarerLitt and...wow...I'm blown away. This needs to be required reading in every high school to start conversations that will hopefully tamp down the hate and divisiveness we are experiencing. #Antisemitism @ccsdschools #MSWL

Still looking for creators writing abolitionist works - been thinking a lot about what I'd like to represent in the adult and children's nonfiction space, and talking about inadequacies of our court and prison systems is very important to me as a human #mswlI know MOST about this from a US perspective, but open to any nationality or court/prison system. Really just want to talk about, think about, and learn about abolition. #mswl

With 2023 on the horizon, Iβm planning out threads to write in the coming weeks. So, #WritingCommunity, what questions do you want addressed? What are your biggest concerns and frustrations? What do you most need help with? #amquerying #amwriting #MSWL

Also, if you use science as an explanation for anything in your manuscript, you must be exceptionally diligent, I donβt do pseudoscience.

Iβm generally not a good match for predictable romance or the paranormal.
I think stories where the protagonist has to have a loved one maimed for them to reach their climactic epiphany feel cheap.

Make me laugh! I especially love witty banter.
I prefer stories that convey subtle wisdom that teach something or leave my perspective forever altered and also well-rounded, unexpected characters.

I love histories about real, bad@$$, quirky, or hilarious women who defied societal expectations. Come at me with a (well-researched) story about Julie d'Aubigny, Wu Zetian, Cheng I Sao, or Anne Bonny and Mary Read's unusual friendship, anything in that vein.

Now back open to submissions in a limited capacity.
Sabrina loves to learn and is looking for fresh perspectives; come at me, authors from historically marginalized backgrounds (anything from non-fiction to crazy fantasy).

4) Keep up to date with current trends/comps. I've seen a few queries described as "unique" with a premise that is reminiscent of a 2022 release. Obvs 2 people can have the same idea, but keeping up to date will give better comps and help you distinguish yours.5) Finally, do keep in mind my #mswl for queries. I really only accept romance & SFF, and so general contemporary fiction is not for me, even if it features the type of characters/relationships that I like.
Thank you all for your amazing queries, and I hope this helps some.

The indomitable @DaveHolmes recommended I watch CLASS ACTION PARK and I am involved. And now I absolutely want a novel set at a deeply mismanaged, absurd theme park. #MSWL

Turns out I'm not super into fae or sirens? Not a thing I knew before diving into QM, but I keep finding that it's not something I super connect w/. Kind of an anti #mswl I guess.
(That doesn't mean *dont* query me, it just means it's a harder sell that has nothing to do w/ you)

Time to rewatch PUSHING DAISIES and be reminded that this is an #MSWL for voice for me. I like the vibes, the voice, the dark whimsy of it all.

Would love an MG or YA book whose theme/lesson is "sometimes your family sucks and you don't have to put them first actually." #mswl
I get a lot of "family is the most important thing" books which is sweet and all but... does not match my experience or that of many of my friends
