I worry about getting so lost in contests that I don't query or write any books I want to write. #askagentIf you participated in contests of any kind, they're worth mentioning in the bio section of your query but it's important to put focus on the story you want to query.
I wouldn't favor anyone who's been in contests over someone who hasn't.

@Megan_Manzano My book is a difficult one to query. Two inter-connected stories in a frame construction, the main one with two MC's. I've been focusing my query on one story, one MC to not clutterb or get wordy... But it loses a bit. Is that the best way?I'd consider introducing both MCs and making the link between them clear. So MC 1 wants X and because of X that causes problems. MC 2 wants X and because of X that causes problems. These two intertwine because of X.

There are several things I look for in opening pages - particularly what an author's writing style is like, if we're starting in the right place, and the beginning hints of what the MC will be like and the world.

@Megan_Manzano What is it that you absolutely have to have in the initial sub (query, sample pages) to make you want more? What can you handle not being there yet if your first criteria is met? #askagentGreat question!
I absolutely love meeting the main character right away and getting a hint of the world. If there's a strong voice or a catchy opening that pulls me in, I tend to hold out a bit longer for initial questions of mine not being answered.

@Megan_Manzano How weird is too weird when it comes to science fiction? It's about the characters but some of the situations are a bit, well, alienThis is a bit hard to answer. I mean, everyone has a different threshold of how much they like sci-fi, but if the world is built right and the situations make sense in the world, then you should be okay.
