Lil BUB @IAMLILBUBIt's me, Mike - BUB's dude. BUB has departed, she's on her way home. - mailchi.mp/lilbub/its-me-… pic.twitter.com/trkosFT2uR
Rest in peace, Lil Bub, you brought us a lot of joy. Please send me all your kidlit manuscripts with happy cat stories now. #MSWL
Molly Cusick @molly_cusickAgents, I'm now caught up on subs through 11/3. I'm going to try to close everything out before the end of the year. If you have any of those special projects you've saved for your last of 2019, I'd love to see them!
ilyse hogue @ilysehMy friend’s 7th grader goes to a school where the kids organized for free tampons in the bathroom. The male principle said no because they would “abuse the privilege.” The kids decided to stage a cookie protest. Behold the tampon cookies! pic.twitter.com/jz2KtbhOhS
A few more from my YA #MSWL:
- Kiera Cass's THE SELECTION, but queer
- A new ANGUS, THONGS, & FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING (dated, I know, but nothing's made me laugh that hard since)
- Something different in fantasy (paranormal? a unique format? surprise me!)
#MSWL: #ownvoices #MG or #YA protagonists with chronic illness, pain, and/or a disability in a story not focused on that, and where no one dies--it's just a part of life. This kind of rep is important to me & I rarely see it in subs or published books.
I'd love to see more body diversity in my subs. When you don't describe a character, the reader (and the cover designer, etc.) is often going to default to the most privileged body types, the ones we typically see celebrated in media. We don't really need more of that. #MSWL
Molly Cusick @molly_cusickSeeing so much YA where the protag is Not Into Instagram, celeb gossip, etc. in a way that suggests she's too good/smart for it. It's a valid character choice, but it's also valid for young women to be into that stuff!
The idea that teen girls are vapid/shallow/dumb for being into pop culture is harmful (not to mention as old as time -- the Beatles, anyone?). I'd love a YA novel where the protag is happily into it all. #MSWL
I'm caught up on agented submissions through 7/15! I'm hungry for all kinds of PB, MG, and YA. #MSWL of the moment: funny-sad MG, sex-positive YA, something in the vein of ANGUS, THONGS, AND FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING. (Please note: I can't consider unagented subs.)
Random #MSWL: I'd love a MG that deals explicitly with periods: the pain, the missing school, gym class, worrying about your pants/your chair, all that. I got mine between 5th and 6th grade at Disney World -- DISNEY WORLD -- and it was a game. changer.
Agents! I am caught up on subs through 6/19 and am hungry for more. A few things on my #MSWL today: a twisty YA thriller I can read at the beach, an #ownvoices MG novel with queer representation, a picture book in the vein of ESCARGOT with a protagonist that should be a plushie.
