Another lovely quote, from Flannery O'Connor: "Conviction without experience makes for harshness." #MSWL I'd love to find non-fiction that struggles deeply to internalize people's experiences before it comments on it--to do deeply ethnographic work, so as to prevent judgement.

Thanks to @AARWeb and @ReadingReligion for a great review of Christian Martyrs under Islam: “This is an excellent and balanced book that I highly recommend for scholars and advanced students in every field related to the Middle East.” @PrincetonUPress readingreligion.org/books/christia…Had the luck of starting—+ well on track to finishing—this terrific account of martyrdom under Islam; another example of a #MSWL NF for this agent in love with research. Hagiographies are studies of exp.; v. interesting to see personal/communal exps. contextualized historically.
