#4 Don't start with "You don't rep this, but I figured I'd try anyway." We don't like this in the query box; we don't like it in live pitching. We say what we accept for a reason and you assuming you're "better" than others isn't a good look #amagenting #querytipThis is huge because minus the fact an agent may not know a type of market well, there may be personal reasons they don't rep something!

Agents + Agented Authors please weigh in. I have someone telling authors that in order to get an agent they have to pay to have their manuscript professionally edited. #amwriting #amediting #askagent #writingcommunityThis is 100% false!
You do not need to pay anyone to have your book edited. If you want a professional editor, this is a choice for you to make!
CPs and Betas are so helpful and you can build relationships.

Starting a story with a line of dialogue can be confusing since we don't have any context of your characters or world yet.#querytip #writingcommunity
This can seem like an easy way to hook readers, but if it's not followed up with details to ground us, this tactic can fall flat.

I've seen this come up in a few queries lately so unless explicitly stated by an agent, please include your ending in your synopsis!#querytip #WritingCommunity #amquerying
It's not a spoiler! For some agents it helps them see the flow of your story and if the conclusion is a satisfying one for the story and readers.

A word on comps. They're not essential. No-one will reject if you omit, bt it's better to have them. Even if 'there are no books to comp' yours, you can comp feels/theme/characters. Eg:If Cardan from The Cruel Prince met Jack Sparrow in space, only LGBTQ+ #10Queries #RevPit
100% this! It's totally okay if you don't have comps at the ready. Comps based off characters/atmosphere/plot are valid.

There are so many agents that it can feel overwhelming finding the right ones to query. Here's a little insight into how I find agents to query. (thread)This is a wonderful thread for #querying writers or those who are looking for agents.

A synopsis shouldn't look like a chapter outline. Rather, it should be a series of paragraphs that tell an agent the key points of your story and plot.

Pick the right audience and genre and own it. It's never a bad thing if other readers pick up your book. It is bad if you miss your readers altogether.

If you say your book is a mashup of 8 different genres, it can look like you're not sure where your book fits in.
It also makes selling extremely hard when there's no place your book can slide into on a shelf.

Of course you want you book to appeal to as many readers as possible BUT you firstly want your book to hit your targeted audience. Publishing especially wants the latter.

In publishing, whether you're on sub, trying to sell a book, trying to get booksellers to pick up your book, or trying to get readers interested, multiple categories take you further from what the book is about.

It can be easy to want to pick multiple audiences/generes to pitch your book, but this isn't the smartest way to go.

On the book reviewer side of things, they want to know if it's a book they'll like and fits in with what they either like to review or want to review.

The audience and genre are two separate things that work together to categorize your book. On the agent side, it allows them to know expected word count, what these books usually contain, and other books to compare to.

Strap in #writers because I think it's time we talk about categorizing your book, whether that be while querying or pitching reviewers.#writingcommunity #pubtip #amquerying #querytip #ontheporch
To preface this thread:
Audience - Who the book is aimed at.
Examples: Middle Grade, Young Adult, Adult, etc.
Genre - The subject your book falls into.
Examples: Fantasy, Contemporary, Sci-Fi, etc.

The query and synopsis work together to inform an agent so include them both upon submission!
They're more helpful than you think.

A query is like a fact sheet. It gives me key elements of your story like genre, audience, word count, hook, etc.
It does not however give me the full plot like a synopsis.
