@LindaEpstein

I'm a senior agent at Emerald City Literary Agency @EmeraldCityLit repping children's books (PB, MG, YA). Also a writer. Yes, it's hard. Repped by @renarossner

Pretty over it.

Query #10 MG contemporary w/ghosts. These are multiple dead sibling ghosts and I just can't go there. It might be good. I don't know. I don't want to read it. ☹️ Clearly I'm the wrong agent for this. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #9 YA fantasy with some of the things I'm looking for but the writing isn't there yet. This is always disappointing but I'm not the right agent to help bring somebody's work up to the next level. It's got to be just about there for me to take a chance on. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #8 MG fantasy with a good pitch & comes recommended by someone I know. Read some of the initial pages but it feels too light and bubble gummy in tone for my current taste. Trying to keep my list small means I'm being uber selective in what I'm taking on. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #7 MG set in fairyland. I'm currently out on submission with a fabulous book set in a mythical land of fairies (but which also includes other topics of interest to me) so this would feel too close to that. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #6 MG about September 11th. As a New Yorker whose anxiety can be triggered by 9/11 books and films, I'm usually very wary of them. It would have to be a very special kind of book. This isn't the one for me. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #5 MG novel in verse. I'd love a novel in verse but for me it has to have a big hook. I want it to be about something BIG. This story seems fine, but isn't grabbing me by the lapels and insisting I read it. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #4 YA realistic contemporary where the query letter is so poorly written and rambles on so much and I'm not even sure what the story is about so I'm just going to go to the next query and hope for something better. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #3 MG realistic contemporary about some boys having crushes on some girls... and a bully... and although this might be well written the subject matter isn't begging me to look further at it. I'm taking on clients very selectively so this wouldn't be for me. Pass #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 May 2019

Query #2 MG nonfiction STEM. Seems slightly interesting but kind of unfocused and I'm currently more focused on fiction. But if it jumped out at me in a stronger way, I might be more interested. The hook just isn't hooking me. Pass. #TenQueries

I'm doing a #TenQueries thread, so folks looking for an agent can see what it looks like on this end, and hopefully get some insight into what I'm looking for and what needs to be in a query letter to get an agent's attention. Ready? Here we go...

Query #1 for a chapter book, but it seems like it's only for 1 book. Chapter books usually sell in a series & revolve around a charismatic character(s). I don't see mention of other books & the story seems very plot specific. Also, no author info in the query. Pass. #TenQueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

10. Another one that's... what is it? Ah. Another picture book submission. Why don't they start with that? Also, I'm STILL not open to picture book submissions. Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

9. YA Scifi/Fantasy type thing that's hard to follow in the query and topically not within my areas of interest. Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

8. MG about friendship with a quirky conceit and possibly some magical realism. Or not. Can't tell. Scanning sample pages. Not pulling me in. I need it to PULL ME IN in a gigantic way, make me want to KILL to represent it. Not doing that. Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

7. But what age is this one for? I don't know! Oh. It's actually a picture book. I'm not taking picture book submissions at this time. Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

6. YA about a girl throwing off the expectations of her family, the summer after HS graduation, in an exotic setting. It's very nice but just not jumping up and grabbing me by the heart/guts saying "Must. Have. This." Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

5. YA with competition/reality television type setup, which is not my jam. (And BTW I've been seeing A LOT of these in my inbox lately.) Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

4. MG steampunk where the cogs and gadgets feel a bit heavy handed to me and the plot feels too familiar. Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

3. YA SF thriller type thing that just doesn't grab my interest. I like more people-y type speculative things rather than science-y techy things. Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

2. YA with an Indian main character (yay!) written by an #ownvoices author (yay!) but the story continues well into the main character's 20s, making it not really YA (boo...) Pass. #tenqueries

Linda Epstein @LindaEpstein · 14 Mar 2018

1. A MG about grief and loss (my favorite!) but the voice is very adult and I don't love the plot setup. Pass. #tenqueries
