I like books where regular kids & teens do amazing, larger than life things. I also like books about larger than life characters doing those things. In case it's not clear "regular kids" means ALL KINDS of kids. "Regular" doesn't mean default white/straight/able-bodied. #MSWL
I like sassy, snappy dialogue (Think Gilmore Girls but also The West Wing or Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey). Make me LOL. I like the way @rainbowrowell @themackenzilee @billkonigsberg have their characters verbally spar. I like CLEVER but I don't mind an F-bomb either. #MSWL
I like sibling books & books that explore complicated family dynamics. I like books with imperfect parents & big, extended families & families of choice. (Also, I know that abuse is a sad & awful truth in some families but I'm the wrong agent for those books.) #MSWL
In case it's not SUPER obvious, I like books w/feminist girls & boys in them. I like books that subvert expected gender roles & "norms" & with both strong girls & strong boys & leaving out toxic masculinity. I also like books that DON'T subvert expected gender roles/norms! #MSWL
Is it possible for a story to be sci-fi but not too sciencey? I want a YA set in space that's not fantasy but is also not super sciencey. Like, space is just the setting & the world-building doesn't feel intrusive & the story isn't necessarily about that. #MSWL
Something I VERY much want more of: submissions by Jewish people who aren't Ashkenazi! I want to see more stories by/about Jewish #POC, Sephardic, Mizrahi, & Ethiopian Jews. Love stories. Fantasy. SciFi. Humor. Historical. Non-scary mysteries. Literary. Bring 'em all! #MSWL
As I'm tweeting about my #MSWL I should probably reiterate that I'd like to see more ms w/Jewish characters by same & they definitely don't need to be religious (but can be). And although they're important, I'm the wrong agent for stories about the Holocaust. ✡️☮️❤️
You know what I really want to see in my inbox when I'm open to submissions 11/1-12/15/19? Super romantic, swoon-worthy & humorous YA in all genres (well, not horror or thrillers). I'd particularly LOVE to see stories by #POC & always welcome the full spectrum of #LGBTQIA #MSWL
Since my 1st book sale as a new agent I've wanted & sold ALL THE GAY THINGS. 🌈🦄 And I still do! One of my greatest joys is repping the #LGBTQ+ community. Please send me all genres repping the full rainbow when I'm open to submissions 11/1-12/15/19. #MSWL
Just finished re-reading @rainbowrowell's Wayward Son & reading Carry On & may I just say "Crowley!" 😍🥰🧙🏽♀️🧛🏽♂️I love that world, the sense of humor, the yearning. You got something w/those elements, magical or not? Send it my way when I'm open to queries. #MSWL
Jessica Russak-Hoffman @HoffmanJess@LindaEpstein Staying open to Jewish YA in case I have anything to send you while you're closed?
I'll be closed to all submissions except for two very specific things I've been looking for for years:
1. a queer feminist re-telling of the Book of Esther
2. a MG or YA set in the Shanghai ghetto (Hongkou)
BTW big #MSWL, in case you all don’t already know this, please send me all your #MiddleGrade and #youngadult #JewishKidLit manuscripts! Particularly interested in anything #queer #fantasy #scifi #romcom #mystery
Laurence Tribe @tribelawI was born in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, the only city in the world that would accept Russian Jews like my parents, just three months before Pearl Harbor. My father, who’d become a US citizen, was interned by Japan. I still have the American flag he hid
jem zero @jem_zero@LindaEpstein Clarification question: Are you exclusively considering #OwnVoices Jewish characters? My contemporary fantasy WIP has a disabled/queer main who is Jewish. I am physically disabled & queer like the character, but while I have Jewish family, I am not personally Jewish.
I'm currently open to middle grade and YA submissions. If you think your manuscript fits what I'm looking for, send it. You can go to #MSWL or their website, to see what I'm interested in. I'm not exclusively looking for anything.
I'm looking for #middlegrade and #youngadult stories. I like realistic contemporary; magical realism; well done retellings of fairytales, folklore, legends; love stories; most anything feminist af. I don't like horror, thrillers, murder mysteries, or anything super scary. #MSWL
