Peter Knapp @petejknappHere are just SOME of the things on my #mswl in 2019 (but I of course often fall in love with the thing I didn't know I was looking for)... (1/13)
#mswl 2019: Smart, hold-no-punches YA contemporary. One of my favorite titles of 2018 was SADIE by Courtney Summers so if you’ve written something like that, yes please! Other favorite recent contemporary YA: Nina LaCour’s WE ARE OKAY, Angie Thomas’s THE HATE U GIVE. (2/13)
Peter Knapp @petejknappSome #tenqueries takeaways: I LOVE secrets. I want all of your secretive characters *and* all of the skeletons in their closets. #mswl
And this is also still true of my #mswl -- I still want all of your secretive characters and the skeletons they're hiding in their closets!
Peter Knapp @petejknappHigh on my #MSWL for 2018: high concept MIDDLE GRADE! If you've written anything like THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL, THE CANDYMAKERS, NEVERMOOR, THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY, etc. then please query me! parkliterary.com/get-in-touch/
Also still very true! High on the #MSWL right now is high concept middle grade!
Peter Knapp @petejknapp#MSWL - realistic middle grade; bonus points for bittersweet stories, ones that make you laugh & cry & laugh & cry. petejknapp.com/post/155643281… pic.twitter.com/n075lVYYAh
#mswl: still on the hunt for these middle grade stories!
Laura E. Weymouth @lauraeweymouthHELLO, STARRED REVIEW FROM PUBLISHERS WEEKLY 😱😱😱
"...Weymouth infuses her characters with a rich panoply of emotions set against wartime England. A shining thread of hope and healing mitigates the book’s heartbreak and underlying trauma..."
#tenqueries takeaways: 1) I'm getting a lot of YA fantasy, but I still like it. 2) though these particular thrillers weren't right for me, I'm interested in character driven adult and YA suspense/thrillers and would be eager to find a big, irresistible one. #mswl
I know I'm not going out on a limb here by saying how much I loved HELLO, UNIVERSE, but I read it this weekend and good heavens I loved it! If you are querying a MG like this, please send it my way. This book was amazing, and my heart belongs to Gulliver. #MSWL
Peter Knapp @petejknapp#tenqueries takeaway: I like quiet middle grade novels. One of my favorite MG's is THE THING ABOUT LUCK by Cynthia Kadohata, which is definitely on the quieter side plot-wise, but emotionally it is LOUD and so resonate and perfect. Defining your emotional hook is KEY.
Very high on my #MSWL for 2018: queer fiction. Are you writing a book in the vein of WE ARE OKAY by Nina LaCour? Might you compare your work to that of Adam Silvera? Please send it to me! And I want more queer MG, especially...for present me, for past me.
High on my #MSWL for 2018: high concept MIDDLE GRADE! If you've written anything like THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL, THE CANDYMAKERS, NEVERMOOR, THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY, etc. then please query me! parkliterary.com/get-in-touch/
