Erin Clyburn ~closed to queries~ @erin_clyburnTrying to switch my brain off work mode, but I keep thinking about manuscripts I’d love to see when I reopen to queries later this month. So here’s a little #MSWL thread I’ll keep adding to:
A riveting YA or adult adventure novel featuring outdoor sports - a hiker, a climber, an ultramarathoner? A YA about teens hiking the Appalachian Trail or the PCT?!
I'm closing to queries soon for a bit to catch up on subs.
Before I do, I'd love to see some literary-leaning horror (MG, YA, adult) in my inbox. Atmospheric horror, body horror, campy horror, autumnal horror, emotional horror—all of it.
#MSWL #amwriting #writingcommunity
I'd also love to see more upmarket fiction, women's fiction, & YA horror. I'm surprised how little of the query pie these genres take up. Please send me more of them. #MSWL
Katherine Harrison @KidlitKatThis post reminds me that I need one of you YA authors to write a creepy gothic retelling of the story of green ribbon girl. Maybe a graphic novel?!? #mswl twitter.com/svershbow/stat…
Echoing this #MSWL (which you probably could've guessed from looking at my Twitter header). A YA retelling of "The Green Ribbon"? Please send it my way!
Alechia says get SAVING RUBY KING! @alechiawritesPlease tell me the most delicious, sweetest, foodtastic (I mean food on every page if possible) YA stories out there. I want to believe I wrote a really great one that you'll love and fingers crossed that'll get out in the world, but I would love to read some right now!!
I just saved a lot of these recs to my to-read list. & also, please send me your foodtastic books (MG, YA, & adult)! #MSWL
Morning, y'all! An update to my #MSWL:
I'm no longer accepting queries for picture books or chapter books. I'm going to focus on MG, YA, & adult fic & nonfic. Check out my fresh new list & see if we might be a match.
Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburnThe boyfriend & I have gone down a YouTube rabbit hole of Fountains of Wayne videos that segued into Mazzy Star & then REM vids & now we are weeping.
On that note, I am very much not a fan of romance or mushy books, but if someone could write an angsty, romantic YA that captures the swoony ‘90s energy of “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, well... that person should send it to me. #MSWL
I’m mostly staying out of #PitMad today, mostly, but please query me if you think we’re a good fit. Right now I’d love to see something YA or A that’s really lyrical & literary, something with a super lush, immersive setting. & as always I’m dying for MG. #MSWL
Oh, hello! At long last, my #MSWL page is up! I will try to keep this as up to date as possible. (I also regularly tweet things I'm looking for here.) Check it out:
#amagenting #amquerying #WritingCommunity
I'm hungry for middle grade. I would also love more literary YA. & I would love an adult memoir/nonfic with an amazing hook (think MY BRAIN ON FIRE, EDUCATED, or FULL BODY BURDEN, not that summer you spent nannying in Europe [I'm sorry but I see so many queries like this]). #MSWL
There are other great examples but I'll leave it at that for now; you get the idea. I'd love to see any mashups like these, where you could almost fit it into a variety of genres. This goes for YA & adult, btw.
I am still thinking about how THE PERFECTION & BLACK SWAN so creepily captured what it's like to take a passion too seriously. (I was a ballet dancer for 18 years, & BLACK SWAN was shockingly familiar.) I'd love a YA/adult horror novel about a dark obsession with the arts. #MSWL
-Horror (YA/adult): Psychological horror, body horror, hauntings, & other weird/new/different horror. (Also, I am NOT looking for zombies/werewolves/vampires/other creatures at this time.)
Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburnAs the holidays approach, some news:
I'll be closing to queries Dec. 1 - 31. I have a pile of queries & subs to catch up on, so please add yours to it before Dec. 1 if you wish!
#amquerying #amagenting #WritingCommunity
While I'm at it, a quick #MSWL of things I would love to see right now:
- Big-hearted contemporary MG
- MG horror
- A domestic thriller
- YA thriller/horror
- YA/A speculative/light sci-fi (think Black Mirror)
- MG/YA/A with a culinary theme
Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburnHere's a specific list of the kind of darker lit I want to see. (I really, really love darker lit. It's my favorite.) If your MS fits this list, please query me! #MSWL #PitDark
For adult & YA, I gravitate more toward character-driven horror/fantasy/sci-fi than plot-driven. I prefer dark lit to reflect truths about humanity through relationships & setting over tangible monsters. I don't really get excited about werewolves, vampires, zombies, demons, etc.
Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburnThis is absolutely unreal. Just incredible. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 twitter.com/eliudkipchoge/…
I swear I’m not gonna work today, but want to mention this: I love track & field. A lot. GHOST by @JasonReynolds83 was a huge FINALLY! moment for me.
#MSWL MG & YA about kids on a track team. Runners, hurdlers, shot putters, high jumpers, decathletes - let’s see ‘em.
Lastly (I think), ghost stories, for MG/YA/adult. Did anyone out there also grow up with Kathryn Tucker Windham's Jeffrey books? Give me ghost stories for people who grew up loving the Jeffrey books. #MSWL
