As the holidays approach, some news:

I'll be closing to queries Dec. 1 - 31. I have a pile of queries & subs to catch up on, so please add yours to it before Dec. 1 if you wish!

#amquerying #amagenting #WritingCommunity

While I'm at it, a quick #MSWL of things I would love to see right now:

- Big-hearted contemporary MG
- MG horror
- A domestic thriller
- YA thriller/horror
- YA/A speculative/light sci-fi (think Black Mirror)
- MG/YA/A with a culinary theme

I am generally not a big historical fiction person, but I am SALIVATING over this write-up of MARY TOFT; OR, THE RABBIT QUEEN by @dexterauthor. If you have a historical fiction based on oddities like this, I want to see it! #MSWL

Lastly, one exception to all this is that I consume domestic thrillers like candy, especially those with wild twists. I loved The Girl Before. Please send me your domestic thrillers.

I would sell my soul for the next The Strange & Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. That's not hyperbole.

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Oct 24

I like YA on the weirder side & YA with really lyrical voices: I still cannot stop thinking about Midwinterblood, The Accident Season, All the Truth That's in Me, or We Were Liars.

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Oct 24

I prefer stories set on Earth, but I love love love portal fantasies. Send me your The Hazel Wood comps.

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Oct 24

I much prefer my fantasies without world-ending stakes. I like personal conflicts & journeys over save-the-world journeys.

I'd love to see MG you could comp to Mary Downing Hahn & in general, more middle grade horror of all kinds, including darker MG involving mysteries/puzzles/scavenger hunts.

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Oct 24

I want to see more super-atmospheric haunted houses & ghosts for MG, YA, & adult.

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Oct 24

(A slight exception to this is that I am a fan of gore & body horror like Ilsa Bick's Ashes trilogy & Wilder Girls. But even those are very character- & setting-driven.)

Here's a specific list of the kind of darker lit I want to see. (I really, really love darker lit. It's my favorite.) If your MS fits this list, please query me! #MSWL #PitDark

For adult & YA, I gravitate more toward character-driven horror/fantasy/sci-fi than plot-driven. I prefer dark lit to reflect truths about humanity through relationships & setting over tangible monsters. I don't really get excited about werewolves, vampires, zombies, demons, etc.

This is absolutely unreal. Just incredible. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ twitter.com/eliudkipchoge/โ€ฆ

I swear Iโ€™m not gonna work today, but want to mention this: I love track & field. A lot. GHOST by @JasonReynolds83 was a huge FINALLY! moment for me.

#MSWL MG & YA about kids on a track team. Runners, hurdlers, shot putters, high jumpers, decathletes - letโ€™s see โ€˜em.

I thought of another: A culinary history/food memoir. Think: The Cooking Gene (a look at people and culture) or Salt (how a food shaped history). Any topic goes. #MSWL

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Sep 24

Lastly (I think), ghost stories, for MG/YA/adult. Did anyone out there also grow up with Kathryn Tucker Windham's Jeffrey books? Give me ghost stories for people who grew up loving the Jeffrey books. #MSWL

This is a huge ask, but something I think about often: 100 Years of Solitude, but about a family from a marginalized community in the South. A multi-generational saga with magic realism. (Who knows; someone might be writing this!) #MSWL

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Sep 24

Of course, I'm dying for any MG that gives me The Halloween Tree vibes right now. (Even though there's something in my inbox right now that might scratch that itch... ๐Ÿ˜ˆ but send it to me anyway.) #MSWL

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Sep 24

A realistic MG ensemble storyโ€”a contemporary The View from Saturday. #MSWL

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Sep 24

A MG light fantasy with the depth of character and heart of Steven Universe. #MSWL

Erin Clyburn @erin_clyburn · Sep 24

I want to see YA or adult horror/spec fic that's deeply rooted in character (We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Baby Teeth). A lyrical spec fic like The Dreamers. I am forever dying for something you could comp to Never Let Me Go. #MSWL
