(2) Gilded Age/1865-1965 histfic a la AMERICAN DUCHESS, THAT CHURCHILL WOMAN, & Downton Abbey, with “dollar princesses” & other marriages ft. wealthy, influential American women in European nobility/royal/peerage society. (MC can be the heiress or close confidant.) A or YA.
I’ve been in such a Mood for two very different kinds of books:
(1) Southern fiction a la Kristy Woodson Harvey, with warmth, setting as character, female friendships and/or multigenerational families, and secrets/hardships that come to light. Can be A or YA!
Laura Crockett @LECrockettI loved THE BIRD & THE BLADE, now I’m reading Elizabeth Bear (RANGE OF GHOSTS) for the first time—and I think what I’m loving most about these fantasies: Khan. Great Khan, Genghis Khan, Mongol Empire, Song Dynasty, Silk Road, history across the steppes & China—I want it. #mswl
If you have a historical, fantasy, or historical fantasy manuscript in adult or YA that fits this era and/or setting, or is inspired by this era and/or setting, please send to me! I want more non-Euro stories like this. #mswl
Historical is hard in YA and Adult but ohhhh, I love it so. Tell me a great story of under-studied women, events, and areas of history. Give me spies and queens, codebreakers and slice of life, THE ALICE NETWORK and OUTRUN THE MOON. #mswl
I’m focusing a lot in Adult as well—women’s fiction, fantasy, and historical. With WF I want to see upmarket book club fiction (ELEANOR OLIPHANT) and romcoms (MEET CUTE). I want lyrical, historically-inspired fantasy (EMPIRE OF SAND, Juliet Marillier, anything witches). #mswl
Help me through this sinus infection by sending me #mswl I’m desperate to read:
Female code breakers/spies a la BBC’s Bletchley Circle, THE ALICE NETWORK, or VELVET UNDERCOVER. Remarkable women in history who served great purpose in war. Mostly adult, but will take YA!
Laura Crockett @LECrockettVery specific: A, YA, or MG about a painter (or apprentice to, or child of) during the 1666 London Fire. Straight HF or hist fantasy #mswl
Currently listening to THE WEIGHT OF INK, which is about a female Jewish scribe in 1660s London. Talk about specific!
Send send send! 1660s England is FULL of amazing stories just waiting to be told. #mswl
New month calls for a MSWL reminder! Eagerly seeking these projects in my inbox, especially contemporary YA and adult. Details: scribblesandwanderlust.wordpress.com/2018/01/01/msw… #mswl (oh, and new blog header, yay 🌿📚)
🐝elle 🐱gato 🐱bees🐝 @ellle_emYou know what I'd like to see more of in genre fiction?
Pre-established romantic relationships.
The story isn't about "finding love" but about people who are already IN LOVE, who already worked through the shaky beginnings, who are comfortable & stable w/each other
An EXCELLENT thread! #mswl for adult fantasy and hist fic
Laura Crockett ☕️ @LECrockettI’d love a YA w a protag whose life is out of the ordinary—focused on their music, dance, Olympic sport—pursuing dreams in that field #mswl
Similar vein: an A w a protag retiring/leaving that life early, navigating adulthood outside of those early career achievements #mswl
