I am pro-short story collections that are thematic of region/place & immerses a reader into an underrepresented community in our literary ecosystem (see: Maxine Clair, Bryan Washington, Kali Fajardo-Anstine) (7/8)

& I love the complexities of multigenerational or familial relationships, especially when sharp prose is brought to the forefront of these narratives. (6/8)

It’s also fun to discover and explore lesser-known historical gems that blossom into fiction (yes, this is a Kaitlyn Greenidge stan account) (5/8)

Stories that create or contribute to larger conversations about society excite me, especially ones that incorporate the ramifications of systemic inequalities (like the school-to-prison pipeline) within a community–both in the US or on a global scale. (4/8)

Fiction that’s ambitious in its scope, something that’s willing to sit at the intersection of multiple themes in a way that feels accessible, yet complex. (3/8)

Stories that center nuanced + dynamic characters. I think of work that has a combination of humor + heart (like Insecure or Abbot Elementary) and uses stylistic elements (like voice, POV, structure) to create a compelling narrative (2/8)
