Y'all, I'm serious, I really need a true enemies-to-lovers in my box. I'm talking Killing Eve's Villanelle/Eve. Or just turn VICIOUS's Eli and Victor gay. Like... is this so much to ask for? #MSWL

Adult: I'm technically open to it, because who knows what I'll find, but it's a super hard sell. I'm only interested in #ownvoices projects that walk the line of being funny and lighthearted while still adding to a larger sociopolitical conversation.

YA: the MC needs to have a strange interest that teaches me something new. I don't do super heavy (sexual assault, addiction, abuse, suicide), and I like to laugh. Not a good fit for sad w/o humor. Quirky voice gets me every time. I love female friendship/empowerment and spooks.

For MG fiction, my interests fall heavily on the action-adventure scale, especially stories informed by non-western mythology and folklore. Loud and funny is a better fit than quiet and contemplative. In nonfiction, I love topics that kids—and I—can geek out about.

For PB, I want 1) content that looks seriously at sociopolitical realities that kids face, ultimately ending with empowerment and hope, 2) stories that teach readers about a new place and/or culture, 3) nonfiction that delights and inspires. Only interested in #ownvoices.

So! In the #MSWL I’ve shared with agents, I include a section for ‘keywords.’ These are descriptive words that spark my interest immediately whenever I see them in fic pitches: dark, psychological, haunting, eerie, chilling, propulsive, disturbing, suspenseful. You get the idea.

Update: I was on a pleasure-reading spree last week, and the novels that held my attention was following a pattern, so I'll elaborate on what I love about #fiction in a few . . . Agents, I hope this will be helpful. #mswl #publishing
