I feel like every single query I read tonight had a car crash and dead people in it. Is everyone okay? Do we need to talk?So jumping off last night’s tweet…my threshold for suffering is pretty low. I’d love to see less punishing stuff in my inbox. More escapist. Fanciful. Fantastical. Inventive. Romantic. Just loads less…death? MG/YA. #mswl

For every #mglit author of adventure, fantasy, & sci-fi who is seeing your book left off lists of adults' favorites: Our books are often considered less serious because of our genres—but they're the books that often stay in kids' minds, the books that kids reread. Courage.I love this thread. It speaks exactly to the kind of books I love and want to work on and why I want to work on them. #MSWL

I *really* want to do more author/illustrator picture books and illustrated projects in general. For a sense of my taste, these are my clients: ldlainc.com/illustrators #MSWL

Adding to this: love, love, love any story that doesn't use violence as a means of conflict resolution.God, so much this last thing. I keep saying I want high stakes but not high body counts. #MSWL

Time for a 2019 #MSWL. I am very much looking for MG and chapter books. Much as I love YA, I have a lot of it!Basically...if you decide to query Michael, you should query me too. #MSWL (is that how this works?)

I just tweeted some #MSWL stuff recently. I’m not sure I have any updates, so here’s my profile again: manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/elan…

If I were to sign a YA right now, and it's tight, it would have to be really unique. As always...commercial, readable, inventive, aspirational, romantic and/or strong-relationship driven, "knows where it comes from but knows where it's going" type stuff. #mswl

I really do need more MG. @JoshuaSLevy needs friends. (I mean, he has friends. Just not on my list.) Voicey, plot-driven, strong concepts, heaps of fun or cleverness. Nothing depressing. Heartfelt, yes. But not depressing. #mswl

For the older PBs, something smart like THE MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK is my holy grail. But also things in the camp of MAX THE BRAVE, WE FOUND A HAT, etc. #mswl

Literary Agent
I'd love to see younger PBs for the 0-3 year set: rhythmic, lyrical, bedtime-appropriate books for babies/non-verbal kids. Like Emma Dodd's books. Sweet, simple, short. #mswl

For PBs: author/illustrators only. (I know that stings a little. Sorry?) I like modern art styles, whimsical-with-heart stories, light humor, honest kid emotions, and simple prose. +100 for women and POC author/illustrators. #mswl

I nuked a bunch of tweets, so I'm going to re-up a bunch of my #MSWL wants and needs. I'm pretty full-up on YA right now, and much hungrier for PBs and MG. But here's some more deets...

Also, I see almost no Latinx submissions. Can apply to literally any category I mention today. So let's get on that. #MSWL

Or take a page from Queen: She's a Killer Queen...Dynamite with a laser beam. That kind of princess. #MSWLBasically, don’t give me European fairy tale princesses. I want the fantasy of being a princess livened up and pushed ahead. #MSWL

E.g.: I secretly loved JOHN CARTER OF MARS, but give me the book about Princess Dejah. She’s awesome. #MSWLOr take a page from Queen: She's a Killer Queen...Dynamite with a laser beam. That kind of princess. #MSWL

A mini #MSWL princess thread: I really do love princess stories, but be INVENTIVE. But go forward, not backward. Maybe some SF princesses?E.g.: I secretly loved JOHN CARTER OF MARS, but give me the book about Princess Dejah. She’s awesome. #MSWL

@ElanaRoth I think there's a huge need for Bible retellings that are not driven by a particular religious POV!! Bible retellings for non-Christians.That would be nice. Or just use a story as a launch point for a cool sci-fi twist. The less literal the better. #MSWL
