Larissa Melo Pienkowski
Larissa Melo Pienkowski @lmpnk📢 attn: #amquerying and #amwriting authors! i LOVE all the queries i've gotten in the past few months and am so excited to respond to them, but since i need to prioritize reading my fabulous clients' manuscripts first, i'll be temporarily closing to queries on march 31st. 💛
some very specific identities of mine that i get REALLY excited to see in books, especially if combined with any of the above:
🐚 Massachusetts native
🏺 ceramic artist
💄 queer femme
🏳️🌈 women's college grad
i also love narrative nonfiction that blends personal experience with investigative reporting or cultural criticism—Gabriela Wiener, Jenny Odell, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Rebecca Solnit are all favorites—and i'd love to see more food writing like THE WAY WE EAT NOW
contemporary retellings of non-Western folklore have been on my wish list for a while now, but i'd also like to see BIPOC- and queer-led reinventions of ~the classics~ like @NghiVoWriting's THE CHOSEN AND THE BEAUTIFUL
queer, feminist, and non-Western horror with subtle social commentary and an atmosphere that fills me with a sense of creeping dread and makes me throw your book across the room while my heart pounds dramatically
voicey stories of diaspora, migration, displacement, being 1st or 2nd gen, being mixed-race/third-culture, having families split apart by borders, all of it—whether it's contemporary like BROWN GIRLS by @DaphnePalasiA or genre-transcending like FOLKLORN by @AngelaMHur
smart, beautifully written heists, cons, and scams where the personal stakes are sky-high, especially if art and culture plays a big role—PORTRAIT OF A THIEF by @gracedli is a favorite (and for context, @ScamGoddessPod is my most-listened-to podcast)
Larissa Melo Pienkowski @lmpnkhappy autumn! 🍂 i am SO excited to open for queries again through the end of the year (possibly later than that, but we'll see).
you know what that means...#amquerying authors, my complete and updated MSWL! manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/lari…
w/ specific wants below, a 🧵:
as always, my list focuses primarily on BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, neurodivergent, and other historically excluded voices. eu adoraria representar mais autores brasileiros especialmente!
Nancy Baym @nancybaymThis morning in Boston a public transit train caught fire on a bridge. Someone jumped into the river below to escape and refused to board the firefighter boat. They threw her a life preserver and she swam to shore and walked away. I want a film about this woman.
🚫 anything having to do with Nazis, ESPECIALLY romance, omg
🚫 historical fiction about wartime
🚫 COVID memoirs
🚫 business, economics, capital-P politics
🚫 sci-fi and space operas
🚫 true crime, unless it involves aforementioned heists, cons, scams, etc.
right now, i am NOT a good fit for:
🚫 post-apocalyptic or dystopian anything
🚫 military/detective/police protagonists
🚫 fantasy w/ elves, aliens, robots, fae, dragons (but i love ghosts, mermaids, bruxas, non-western mythological creatures, and feminist monsters)
✨ contemporary and well-researched historical queer romance, with pining and butterflies and swoony tension and steaminess and a REALLY strong hook
✨ books that celebrate books, both MG and adult
✨ heists, cons, scams, the more glam the better (no cishet man protags)
✨ cozy mysteries w/ high personal stakes, found family, and evocative settings
✨ "unlikable heroines" in the vein of Dorothy in A CERTAIN HUNGER and Lynnette in THE FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP
✨ feminist horror, thriller, suspense, you name it
i would love to see:
✨ BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, neurodivergent, undocumented, historically excluded voices
✨ adult fiction set in latin america (esp brazil) across genre, own voices
✨ MG fantasy feat. non-western folklore and high personal stakes
happy new year, everyone! 🎉 may this one be infinitely more gentle to all of us.
also, since my inbox reopened today, i thought i'd update my wish list for 2022, though everything mentioned on my website bio and actual #MSWL profile still stands. 🧵
