4. I want a cinematic, high concept fantasy unlike anything I have seen before. I love unlikable ladies (but they must still be relatable), and I would love a single POV. Character driven is the BEST for me. With literary-esque writing. #MSWL
What I am looking for here is fantasy that is high concept, but beautifully written. All these authors I read in 1 sitting, ignoring everything. I want a fantasy where I ignore the world. Make it stand out and feel like I have never seen these elements before. #MSWL #YA #MG
Speaking of Sabaa, I want cinematic fantasy. What do I mean by that? High concept, sweeping, almost grand like a movie in your head. Sabaa does this wonderfully, but so does Marie Rutkoski, Sarah J. Maas, Tahereh Mafi, Laini Taylor. #MSWL #YA #MG
In light of my query 0, I am going to do a #MSWL tomorrow. For now, here is a snapshot:
-Fluffy YA rom-com.
-Well-written psychological friendship book (YA)
- Literary-esque but cinematic fantasy YA and MG
- Historical Fiction like @RutaSepetys
- Quirky, Fun, Voicey MG
Lauren Spieller @laurenspiellerWriters, I have a few kidlit #mswl items I'd love to see in 2019!
-funny, contemp YA a la WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, HOT DOG GIRL, HERETICS ANONYMOUS
-LatinX characters! Please!
-Grounded dark fantasy, a la SAWKILL GIRLS, THE DEVOURING GRAY, THE RAVEN BOYS
Natascha Morris @SoCalledYALifeSomething #TeamNat shares, regardless of their chose form, is a willingness to work, be pushed beyond their comfort zones, to experiment, to play, and to remember that we aren't doing easy things, but that is why we are gonna be legendary. (subtle reference to team song 🤓)
And if you have made it this far in my fan girling, you might have noticed that the genres I DON'T HAVE. Which is why I am looking for:
In addition to my fantasy and contemporary list. #MSWL
Natascha Morris @SoCalledYALifeI am looking for YA fantasy. I have 3 dedicated fantasy authors: @alexandraovery (because damn, lady can write an unreliable character and amazing concepts) @StefanieSuzaya (because lady wrote a dark Asian fantasy that drew me in), and @KariTrogen (who spoke to kid me) .
So with my #MSWL in fantasy I am looking for these elements:
-fantastic world building
-complex, rounded characters
-high concept plots or explorations of tropes froma new angle
The graphic novels is so hard. I had one I loved but I had to pass on because it wasn't ready, but I am looking for authentic dialogue and a story that feels original and different. Fantasy is where I lean towards on these, but open to see anything. #MSWL
