And agents, if you have a project that you feel meets the above criteria but have questions, shoot me an email so we can have a meeting and talk books. Or if you did send it to me and I haven’t followed up with you, please shoot me a reminder. 😅 Thanks so much for reading! 💚
My white whale (I have been asking for years!) is an atmospheric traditional contemporary mystery in the vein of Louise Penny and Suzanne Chazin. Bonus points if the author and characters are both marginalized! #MSWL
Because romance is such a competitive and crowded and shrinking marketplace in print, those submissions must have strong, complex, and relatable characters. The hooks must be compelling, the narrative voice must be entertaining, and the pacing has *got* to be just right. #MSWL
Norma @normajeanesaysHello, literary agents! It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, so here’s a thread of #MSWL requests, aka the submissions I want to see in my inbox:
First off, work by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or disabled authors are always welcome in the genres I edit, which includes romance yes, but also mystery and thrillers, upmarket fiction, fiction with fantasy/sci-fi/ speculative elements that are mainstream crossovers, and nonfiction.
okay i can't stop thinking about it, which means i have to #mswl it:
agents, if you can send me an adventure romance that evokes the fun, the fear, and love story that's in THE MUMMY (1999), you may just find yourself a book deal
sarah maclean @sarahmaclean@normajeanesays Norma. Only one of us is an editor. FIND ME SOME ALPHAS.
So, this dovetails pretty nicely into my other Book Twitter convo today.
Agents, please help me. For Romancelandia, and Sarah 💕 #MSWL
Norma 🇵🇷🇨🇺 @normajeanesaysfirst author/agent duo to submit a romance that i like with this aesthetic wins a book deal #mswl twitter.com/gelrdrgz/statu…
I’ve been wanting this aesthetic for a Latinx romance, have you been listening? #mswl
I Am Lauren Jernigan 🌜 @LEJerni13You know how there’s definitely a production assistant running the AI system via Remote Desktop for #TheCircleNetflix contestants? I want a romance story about one falling in love with their contestant and helping them not say stupid things to other players.
I JUST SAID I wasn't going to do these anymore, but... #MSWL
Happy #MSWL day! If I don’t get a romance/women’s fiction submission about a 30-year-old Latinx woman who’s throwing her quinceañera part 2 (aka the one she never had) and finally gets the boy who got away, I will flip. Think Never Been Kissed meets The Wedding Singer con azucar.
Brooklyn White @brooklynrwhiteI wrote about the co-optation of Hot Girl Summer. "If you don’t support Black women, give them access, and make them feel seen in the products you’re peddling, then you shouldn’t adopt their intraracial phrases to line your pockets." bitchmedia.org/article/brands…
Which is why in my previous call for women's fiction or romance manuscripts that are inspired by Hot Girl Summer, I specifically asked to see work by Black women writers.👇🏽 #MSWL
Esmeralda Bermudez 🦅 @LATBermudezMy little sister recently announced that when she turns 30 she’ll be having a Treintañera with a gown and a vals to make up for not having a party at 15. Is this a thing?
I’d love to see this novel in my inbox. #MSWL
Madeleine Colavita @m_colavitaHigh on my #MSWL this year is Jane the Virgin in romance novel form. I don't know exactly what it would look like, but that's what I want.
Madeleine, have you had any success yet? Where is the Jane the Virgin inspired romance novel we deserve and need? #MSWL
Norma @normajeanesaysIf I ever got a romance/women's fiction like Jane the Virgin/Ugly Betty, I'd die with happiness. #R #CR #WF #MSWL pic.twitter.com/YKaTAMA6nh
It's been over 2 years for this one, and I have a field of crickets in my inbox too. #MSWL
Norma @normajeanesaysHistorical romance with diverse heroes/heroines. I want to know about the Regency peeps of African/Indian/Jewish (&more!) descent. #MSWL
It's been 2 years and NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING has made it to my inbox! #MSWL
