I recently shared my #MSWL so in honor of mswl day I’m just gonna put this here 😊

Quick note: I’m pulling back on PBs quite a bit. Last year they easily took over my query inbox (nearly ⅔ of my submissions were PBs!), and I’m hoping to balance out my list this year. I’m still open to PBs but will mostly be looking for author/illustrator projects.

Things I DON’T love/DO NOT want to see: plots that center around communication issues, white saviorism, really intense world building, super scary horror, rhyming for the sake of rhyming, blatant abusive relationships

Things I DO love/DO want to see: fun settings that push the story along (museums, resorts, amusement parks, public transit, etc.), wholesome cinnamon rolls, anti-capitalist themes, non-western mythology, school trips, smashing the patriarchy, found family, cozy fantasies

Things I DO love/DO want to see: unconventional magic systems, astronomy, page-turning thrillers, queer love, passionate characters w/ uncommon hobbies, enemies-to-lovers, friendship breakups, teen sleuths, stories not set in the US, body positivity, zombies

The main things I’m on the lookout for are:
📗 High concept fiction w/ a quirky cast of characters (MG & YA/all genres)
📘Bold & magical graphic novels (MG & YA/all genres)
📙Fresh & fascinating narrative nonfiction (MG & YA)

I want random acts of CLIMATE. How can kids (and adults!) do good for the planet on a daily basis? I’d love to see some creative takes that go beyond recycling, reducing plastic use, & aren’t afraid to address govt/corp responsibility. #MSWL

I know it’s not a kidlit book, but THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA cured my reading rut and was a hug I desperately needed. I would love to see something like this but for MG/YA with truly wholesome, chaotic, and lovable characters. #MSWL

For YA, I want first job stories, gap year journeys, rom-coms with a big hook, and literally anything that could be comp'd to Sex Education or Never Have I Ever. #MSWL

For MG, I would love to see contemporary stories like FROM THE DESK OF ZOE WASHINGTON, STARFISH, and VIOLETS ARE BLUE. I’d also love to see more light fantasy projects inspired by non-western mythology! #MSWL

I’m actively looking for NF. I specialize in working with scientists and experts in their field and would love to work with more!

THIS is the kind of energy I want in a NF project. Tell me facts, but make it absolutely absurd. #MSWL

I'm always looking for MG & YA fiction; graphic novels (early reader - YA); nonfiction for all ages (STEM, social justice, little known history); author-illustrated PBs; projects by BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse & disabled creators. #MSWL

I’m loving all the nonfiction queries I’m getting! I’d also love to see more illustrators/graphic novelists who are interested in creating/working on NF projects for kids. #mswl

Lastly, I’d really just love a story set in Chicago for any age range and genre. #mswl

I love nonfiction and want to see all the STEAM stories out there, along with projects about little known history/heroes. I would also love a proposal for a MG book about body positivity and self image. #mswl

For picture books, I’d love to see more stories about communities and family or cultural traditions. I’m also down for totally silly, wacky stories that make kids giggle. ☺️

I’d also be interested to see some more author/illustrated projects with bold, colorful styles! #mswl
