Cortney Winn @CortneyWinn11

@CortneyRadocaj Would a query that was rewritten to better explain the unique premise of the manuscript, be acceptable to re-submit? Or, is it a one shot and thats all? I am brand new to all of this so please forgive my naive self.๐Ÿ˜‚

Replying to @CortneyWinn11

No worries, donโ€™t feel embarrassed!! Thatโ€™s why we do these #askagent sessions ๐Ÿ˜Š

And it really, really depends. I would err on the side of NOT submitting againโ€”agents reject for a slew of reasonsโ€”but if the rejection was specifically โ€œthe query didnโ€™t grab meโ€... then maybe?

Kristi McManus ๐Ÿ›ซ @kristimcmanus

@CortneyRadocaj How long should a writer wait to nudge an agent on a full?

Replying to @kristimcmanus

Three months is a general rule of thumb. Fulls can take a while to get toโ€”theyโ€™re a lot more energy and time-intensive than queries or partials. Like, for me, I can go through queries or read a partial on my lunch breakโ€”but fulls I have set aside several nights at LEAST to read

Jim Lamb @Jcl5150

@CortneyRadocaj How important are comps in a query letter?

Replying to @Jcl5150

For me theyโ€™re not necessary. Iโ€™m not going to ding you for NOT having comp titles listed in your query.

HOWEVER, if theyโ€™re bad or overdone (like using Twilight, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, LOTR, etc) it immediately makes me question if you know where your book would be shelved

@CortneyRadocaj What YA tropes are you a sucker for and which are you over? pic.twitter.com/V9k71UjHIj

Replying to @CodyDeBos

OHHHHHH. Hmmm. Iโ€™m ALWAYS a sucker for enemies-to-loversโ€”I can never get enough angst. Hades & Persephone retellings always draw me in. Mixing tech and flesh, or anything magic and flesh. Gun-slinging girls in gritty underworld settings ALWAYS.

Cortney Winn @CortneyWinn11

@CortneyRadocaj What was the most impressive query that you ever received? What made it so?

Replying to @CortneyWinn11

I MEAN Iโ€™m slightly biased and I always think of @Atomic_Pixieโ€™s query for her YA cyberpunkโ€”it was sharp, & showed me several unique pieces of her story without confusing me. It had descriptors that piqued my interest, and most of all just had me EXCITED to dive into her pages ๐Ÿ˜

Kahlan Strop, Author @AuthorStrop

@CortneyRadocaj Whatโ€™s the best advice you can give for writing a query letter? What makes one stand out to you?

Replying to @AuthorStrop

For me itโ€™s detail โ€”way too many queries are vague. They give the basic ideas but not whatโ€™s in THAT particular story.

i.e. โ€œMC must save the worldโ€ vs โ€œx, y, and z lead MC into having a personal stake in saving the world and will do it in this wayโ€

Sonora Reyes @SonoraReyes

@CortneyRadocaj @thekatsmews do you recommend putting major trigger warnings in a query? does this answer change if the warning is a spoiler?

Replying to @SonoraReyes

I would say yes. No twist/spoiler is worth potentially blindsiding someone with a major trigger, in my opinion!

You donโ€™t have to give everything away mind you, but just warning for content can potentially save someone a lot of pain โค๏ธ

Christopher Metcalf-Writer @Chris__Metcalf

@CortneyRadocaj Oh, sorry forgot sub genre dystopian/ post apocalyptic

Replying to @Chris__Metcalf

Hmmm. In that case I would say 70k or 80k, depends on how worldbuilding heavy you end up making it. If it needs a lot of world building, pushing to 90k is okay too!
