@clemmiegirlnz I like both on #PitMad days! And querying two is tricky because what happens if an agent makes an offer, but other agents don’t have the book that’s received an offer? I’ve seen people do it and I’ve never been offended when people contact me saying they’ve received an offer onAnother manuscript, and they would ask me if I wanted to read it. Usually I’ll say yes and to send it my way. It’s never rubbed me the wrong way, but it can rub some people the wrong way. I think it’s fully up to you, in all honesty. Just make sure you don’t send both manuscripts

@LitAgentKelly Hi Kelly! Thanks for this! I know each query is only focused on 1 book but what do you suggest when an author has two books ready to query- would you query one over another? One to one agent and the other one to a different agent? Or query one but pitch both on PitMad days? thx!I like both on #PitMad days! @LitAgentKelly Is it okay to “give away” more about your story if you’re pitching an agent at a conference? Or is it better to hold back on big reveals like in a query letter?Hmmm, think of your pitching in person like a slightly shortened query letter. If they ask how it ends or what the climax is, etc., then give them more info. They’ll have questions and each agent is different! I never want to know the ending. :)

@LitAgentKelly @RachelxRussell Probably already asked but what is a good way to get an agent? What would automatically turn you off from a perspective author?Oof, cockiness and someone talking down to me. I like to work with people who make me enjoy my job, and who understand and enjoy their writing careers thoroughly. I also look for great voice because it’s something no one can teach you as a writer! :)

@LitAgentKelly I am querying a 112k women’s fiction. Is that too long? Will it stop agents from asking for partials even if they like my query? That’s a little long in my opinion, but that’s up to the agents, actually. I try to keep all fiction under 100k as a general rule of thumb, with the exception of adult high fantasy and sci-fi. :)

@AKingstonBooks @LeahBoudreaux2 True, but we usually find out if we do research anyways. So sometimes it’s better to mention it in the query and just admit that it didn’t work out the way you had wished and that you’re willing and happy to learn traditional publishing and are hoping to find an agent toChampion any further works, as you’d like to not be in the self publishing industry anymore.

@LeahBoudreaux2 @LitAgentKelly Graceie Lou is adorable! If you self-published before, but had lackluster sales is it even worth mentioning in the query? Seems like highlighting a failure in a resume...

@LitAgentKelly Oh, me! (Thanks for spending your time on this, by the way!) my husband and I both have polished MS (his is Spec. Thriller, mine is Contemp. Romance). There are a handful of agents that rep both of those genres. Is it a problem for us both to query the same agent? No, I don’t think so. I think you’ll be okay, and you’d have a built in support system. But it may be better in the long run to find separate agents in order to keep the professional and personal lives as separate as possible. Just my opinion though!

@LitAgentKelly Hi Kelly, should there be page breaks between chapters when sending pages to an agent? Thanks! That makes life easy, yes. Set page breaks if you know how to work them. :)

@LitAgentKelly This is my second question- feel free to skip if you don't have time. Is it acceptable to completely rework a query and resend it to the same agent or someone else in that agency? If you rework the entire manuscript, that’s usually when it’s okay to resend, but if you think it might be alright and the person is decently laid back, I’d say sending it to the same agent again would be the best way to go.

@LitAgentKelly If a word count is high for its genre (137k for YA fantasy) is that a hard no, points against, or not that big a deal? #AskAgentThat’s a fast no, actually. The first thing I usually look at is word count, so if it’s too high for me to literally sell, it means it can probably be edited more before coming back to me.

@LitAgentKelly Hi Kelly 😊What does your perfect query formula look like (if you have one)? As an agent, how many requests for partials or fulls do you make?
Also your pupper is so cute! Please give him or her a big hug for me! Unless that stresses out dogs, then a nice pet should do. 😊
So @stdennard has an awesome article to answer your question. :) And oof, I think I did statistics in early January, and it turned out to be somewhere around requesting 1-3% of the queries I get, or something or the sort? Roughly 73 per year or something? susandennard.com/2010/11/how-i-…

@LitAgentKelly Do querying writers need to have a website? Is it a dealbreaker if they don't? I deleted all of my social media (besides Twitter) in the last year because I never used them. I know agents search up writers to ensure they don't have a dodgy internet presence. Its not a dealbreaker, but it helps us know and understand that you’re willing to do the work to market yourself in the coming years!

@LitAgentKelly How do you find Beta Readers??Conferences and twitter! Find some awesome writing friends online and in person, join writing groups, and definitely socialize with people on the hashtag #WritingCommnunity! That hashtag is awesome for writers reaching out!

@LitAgentKelly I just saw you answered something similar a little while ago! So thank you for that. Any other advice or info you'd love to give, I will freely take. It’s severely dependent on the agent and how much they’re drowning in queries and submissions at that time. Sorry to not have a more definite answer!

@LitAgentKelly Thank you! Would you recommend that writers should weigh heavier in one genre, then, and pepper it with the other, or take a more even approach? Or does it depend on the piece?I think it depends on the piece and the agent, in all honesty. I prefer weighing heavier in one and having elements of others.

@LitAgentKelly Hi Kelly, so kind of you to do this! I'm querying my first YA sci-fi, but before that I entered it in a competition (lost) and left it there until it acquired 6,500+ hundred reads. Is that worth mentioning in a query? The site was FicFun.com, not exactly a goldmine. It can be, but it might be better utilized to show you can gather a following. :)

@LitAgentKelly What do book deals for new authors look like in terms or Royalties and Advance? Famous authors have deals where they split profits 50-50 with the publishers. Is that a good deal and do new authors get such contracts? No, and that’s not even really plausible for even the most famous authors today. Royalties for each publishing house are pretty standard. This is a great article to try to explain more in depth. thebinderyagency.com/blog/howdopubl…

@LitAgentKelly I'm working on my first novel (Thriller). Is this a good time to be writing for that genre? Or are you seeing demand declining?I think you should write whatever you’d like to write. :)

@LitAgentKelly Would you reject a manuscript based on formatting? Not necessarily, but whacky formatting that’s consistent usually tells us the writer might be new or working with a different program.
