Although I’ve successfully sold a memoir on partial, it’s very difficult to do without a significant platform or wide media coverage. 99% of the time you need to finish writing the memoir to pitch it to agent/editor. Exceptions are just that. #memoir #querytip #publishing

Writers, if an agent invites you to submit again in the future, they mean your *next* book. One that shows growth and improvement. Not a manuscript you shelved and are bringing out on a Hail Mary. #querytip

#querytip Make sure to do your research. Due diligence should always come before not after, you query. Make sure you can accurately state the category and genre of your work, and know the industry standards for word count in your genre. It helps to know your own market!

#QueryTip: do not query agents or editors on LinkedIn. We have submission guidelines that are stated on our websites for your use. LinkedIn is not the place to query.

Proofread your query before you send it (spell the agent's name right!) and follow submission guidelines (don't send several queries for different projects in a row!). Not doing so is a quick way to the 'No' pile. #querytip

#querytip: Never qualify “novel” with “fiction” or “nonfiction.” A novel is fictitious by definition, so the former is redundant and the latter’s incorrect.

#QueryTip Agents pass for many reasons: changing trends in the market; they already represent something similar; or even though something may be strong, well-written and publishable, they didn't fall in love. A pass doesn’t mean your project won’t sell. #DontGiveUp

#querytip when an agent passes on your manuscript, don't just up and send pages anyway with a note asking him/her to reconsider. I appreciate the hustle, I guess, but it ain't gonna work.

A question writers SHOULD ask when they interview an agent for representation is: "What's your response time, when I'm your client, to my emails?" When you're their client & they habitually don't keep that time frame, fire them! #querytip #agentlife

A typical question by writers when they interview an agent for representation is "Are you an editorial agent?" When you get the answer, a great follow up question would be: "Can you give me a specific example?" #querytip #agentlife
