Although I’ve successfully sold a memoir on partial, it’s very difficult to do without a significant platform or wide media coverage. 99% of the time you need to finish writing the memoir to pitch it to agent/editor. Exceptions are just that. #memoir #querytip #publishing

Writers, if an agent invites you to submit again in the future, they mean your *next* book. One that shows growth and improvement. Not a manuscript you shelved and are bringing out on a Hail Mary. #querytip

#querytip Make sure to do your research. Due diligence should always come before not after, you query. Make sure you can accurately state the category and genre of your work, and know the industry standards for word count in your genre. It helps to know your own market!

If you're using an element in your story that's strongly linked to another author (fight clubs, for instance), work hard to show how you're reinventing it / making it yours. #querytip

#querytip if you're going to email an agent to ask him/her questions about submission guidelines, make sure the answers to those questions aren't readily available online. Odds are, they are.

#querytip: Never qualify “novel” with “fiction” or “nonfiction.” A novel is fictitious by definition, so the former is redundant and the latter’s incorrect.
