#QueryTip: some agents are very hands on with editorial work, and others see themselves largely as salespeople. We all have our own approach. Make sure to ask what approach the agent you're querying takes, because it's SO important that it aligns with your needs!

A.M. Rose call me Ann @annmrose
If I type ISLAND TIMES and SNOWFIRE and THE FRIEND ZONE and LOVE TO BE LUCKY and LOVE AND OTHER WORDS—at a glance, how do you know which is the unpublished book? It’s hard, right? Which is why your title should be the only one in CAPS in a query letter. #QueryTip #AmWritingNon published title in ALL CAPS. Published titles in italics.
If it doesn't allow italics, regular font or quotations.

FYI: Out of the 20 queries I’ve read so far today, 3 started with a character waking up, and 2 started with a dream.
Authors, I promise there’re more interesting dropping in points.
This is such a common used opening it just doesn’t stand out.

Authors: Quick reminder to accept all changes before sending out your materials. When it's full of comments and redline it does make it a little harder to read. 😉

#querytip for #amquerying authors:
... the *optional* section in my form for sharing identity-related info relevant to your project is NOT for arguing that being white + married to a POC / raising nonwhite kids gives you the lived experience to write from our POV. (it doesn't.)

Reminder to authors that a "no" doesn't mean "no for every project you ever write." So if you think we are a good fit, please do query me again with your new projects.

While we are talking about query trench frustration: I've been mulling over some thoughts about form v. personal response, how much feedback to give in a pass, and my own personal conflict with the idea of giving a lot of "helpful" feedback in a pass. 🧵

A #querytip I never imagined I'd have to share, hoping it went unsaid: please don't send a cold query for your based-on-a-true-story novel that begins with a real photo of a dead body! Thanks!!

When querying, you should already be writing your next book. Never wait for a book to be picked up before starting your next one. Published or not, the best way to sell your book is by writing your next one. #querytip

Sometimes query advice doesn't apply to everyone. For ex, 250-350 words is sound advice, but not if you're writing SFF or historical. It's more important to establish context so we have enough info to understand goals, obstacles, and stakes than to keep it brief. #querytip

#querytip querying authors, in your bio if you don't have writing accolades, I still love knowing your day job and some tidbit about you. I read samples first and if I go back to your query, that's often missing (probably to keep things short). I mean, give me a sentence or two!

Always follow the publisher’s or agent’s guidelines when querying your manuscript. They are there for a reason. #querytip

Authors: Reminder to double check the file you're attaching when you submit is your MS and not your History homework 😬 On a side note, I think you deserve an A. ❤️ #QueryTip #WritingCommunity
*If this does happen to you just resubmit, no worries. We all make mistakes ❤️
