And, my usual disclaimer, if your work contains any of the following: scammers, heists, something 'Highsmithian,' fish out of water, rich people behaving badly, or a Carson McCullers comp... PLEASE DO APPLY!
Fun might mean: turning tropes on their heads (COUNTERFEIT), acute social commentary (WHITE IVY and SUN DAMAGE), sending us to mind-boggling locations (MIDNIGHT and THE DIVE), or a steady drip of dark humor (HOW TO KILL YOUR FAMILY). Hit me with whatever you've got in this space
I'm also nostalgic for the epic love stories I read and watched on the screen growing up. Call me old-fashioned, but where are the 2023 equivalents of THE ENGLISH PATIENT, TITANIC, LOVE STORY, ATONEMENT? Make me cry, people!
I'm still hungry for historical! On that front: I can't stop thinking about GREAT CIRCLE, which I waited a criminally long time to read. I'm desperate for an epic family novel told across timelines and generations.
I know the latest season of YOU has been getting a lot of flack, but I'm unabashedly addicted. YOU has been a #MSWL stalwart for me, but I'm loving the Agatha Christie twist this time around... I'd love for something similar to land in my inbox... 👀🕵️♀️🔪🖋️
Rose Wilding @Rose_WldngFive chapters into @HeatherDarwent’s The Things we do to our Friends and I am utterly hooked. I LOVE that the 2023 literary scene is bursting with women going feral 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Adding the phrase 'women going feral' to my #mswl...!
Perennial favorite themes: cons, hoaxes, fish out of water, outsiders becoming insiders, upstairs/downstairs themes, family dramas (esp those with a humorous element a la THE NEST or THE MOST FUN WE EVER HAD, though I wouldn't kick a heartbreaker like ASK AGAIN YES out of bed)
As for historical: I'm always on the lookout for previously untold stories and unheard perspectives, particularly those of forgotten/misunderstood women a la THE PARIS WIFE, WEYWARD, THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR.
I'll also never tire of literary suspense - especially that which pulls the curtain back on a new community or subculture, or, as above, has escapist elements. Last year's faves in this space: ALL THAT'S LEFT UNSAID, MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW and THE CARETAKERS.
I'm also manifesting something heist-y! Whether that's contemporary and hilarious like COUNTERFEIT or a historical masterpiece like THE HOUSEKEEPERS (coming this summer), I'm open to anything in this space.
