Megan Lynch is drafting ✏️ @mlynchbooks

@BookEndsJessica #askagent do y'all bring books you're interested in representing to each other for review? If so, what are those meetings like?
Replying to @mlynchbooks

Every agency is different. Sometimes we do and sometimes we just offer. If we do ask for second reads on something they become very opinionated and we evaluate everything from characters to plot to ideas to fix things that might need fixing. #askagent

Leigh A. Hartman @barefoot4life85

@BookEndsJessica Question part 2: what exactly IS a blurb? Is it like a synopsis or is it more specific than that?
Replying to @barefoot4life85

a blurb is exactly the cover copy for your book. If you're looking at how to write blurbs (or queries) read Query Shark and the cover copy for your comps. #askagent

Claudie Wilson @cawilsonaz

@BookEndsJessica When you consider offering rep for author's Book #1 and she says Book #2 (finished or in progress) is a different genre, does that negate you trying to sell a 2-book deal? #amrevising
Replying to @cawilsonaz

Not for me. I assume that the author will put book #2 aside if needed. I assume this with any book deal. If you're writing a series I don't expect you to be writing #2 before you've sold #1 for example. #askagent

Leigh A. Hartman @barefoot4life85

@BookEndsJessica What do you look for in a good query letter? #amwriting
Replying to @barefoot4life85

A great blurb. That's what I want first and foremost. I want to know if it's a book I want to read. That's it. #askagent

Katie @keollins

@BookEndsJessica How accurate do comps need to be? I have two that kinda work but aren't perfect, and one is older (within 10 yrs) from a fairly successful series. And I know the age on that one is frowned upon
Replying to @keollins

I guess I would ask if you need them at all in that case? Comps are meant to give agents a taste of who the readers will be. Fans of Helen Hoang for example or fans of Shelly Bell? #askagent

You want your comps to be current titles (no later than 5 years) so looking online or, if you can, sitting your butt in the actual bookstore and seeing what's on recent releases or hot books tables. #askagent

Natalie Hyde Collins @sunflowrscience

I wonder: do lit agents brace themselves on this day every year in anticipation of being inundated with queries for unedited Nanowrimo first drafts on December first? #askagent
Replying to @sunflowrscience

I think it's gotten better. In the past, I was definitely inundated, but I think authors are more knowledgeable now. That being said, I passed on a few queries today that had me wondering. #askagent

Prescriptive nonfiction can be a little shorter, but you should still shoot for about 50,000 words. I don't represent novellas. #askagent
