If you’re describing a female character by looks first, ask yourself if you’re doing the same with your male characters. Women characters need to be more than their looks. #querytip

Formatting, font and design matter. Obviously we read with our eyes & if we are reading submissions with poor margins, inconsistent formatting, or a weird font it gives us an impression before we even read a word. #querytip

Just as you've been told to show and not tell in your manuscript, you need to show and not tell in your query. Show me how this is a thriller and the plot. #querytip

Replying to @brookgideon

Don't think of writing the query as the next step. Work on it before you work on the manuscript and during. Does the manuscript still match the vision you had with your query? Does the query need to change with the ms? #querytip

The art of writing a query is as much a part of your career in writing as writing the manuscript. Work on your query as you would your manuscript. Take time each week to hone & craft your blurb. #querytip

When querying nonfiction platform is critical and often the first thing I look for. Tell me who you are and what makes you special. #StPatricksDay #querytip #NF

An agent's earnings are commission-based. Offering to pay more in commissions or an upfront fee for editing is not needed & any agent accepting a deal is unethical. If you have the means to offer this to an agent there are many editors worthy of hire. #querytip

When submitting sample pages always submit the first pages or chapter. If you feel that material is not important to the book then it shouldn't be in there at all. #querytip

I don't mind that authors query me in genres I don't represent (SFF), but it seems like a waste of your time when other great agents at @bookendslit would be better. Our query forms make it easy. If you don't see your genre on the form, she's probably not for you. #querytip

Think of your query blurb as the back cover copy of your future book. In fact, knowing that it might actually be used as the basis for your actual cover copy might help you understand its importance. #querytip

BookEnds switched to using Query Manager in 2016 (a free query tracking database agents) and we will never turn back. It makes it easy for authors to check on query status & ensures queries don't disappear in crowded inboxes. We can also easily check from phones, etc. #querytip

Even when submitting through a query form you should include a full query letter. Agents like to read and we like to see all the details. #querytip

I have some thoughts on queries today. If you're going to use a name in the referral line of my Query form please be sure to explain in your letter how that person came to refer you. #querytip

Psychological Suspense, for example, is not a hook, it's a genre. The hook is what makes it stand apart from other books in the genre. THE OTHER WOMAN (who is the mother) is the hook. #querytip

Wise words from an agent back when I was an editorial assistant, "I always make friends with the assistants because someday they will be the editors & agents I want to work with." #WednesdayWisdom

We all started as Literary Assistant, Editorial Assistant or other & it was there we made our first acquisition or signed our first author. One day, when an assistant requests your material, be excited. They are the future "big-name agent" you always wanted. #querytip
