Lauren Spieller's book is available for preorder @laurenspieller
In response to my tweet yesterday, many writers said it's hard to find CPs to line edit their work, either b/c people don't know how, or because it takes up too much time. But what's missing there is YOU: you need to *offer* the line edit in order to receive it in return.Everything Lauren is saying here is vital, especially when you’re searching for an agent. I’m far more line edit focused than copy edit, because if there’s extraneous, repetitive, jarring material, I’m taken out of the narrative.
Line edits are SO IMPORTANT. #querytip

2) don't forget your hashtags. #Pitmad, genre hashtags, age hashtags. This helps agents narrow down our search and find your pitch!3) Use comps if they're accurate and helpful. Comps don't HAVE to be other books. Something like comparing your SFF to Stranger Things is just as efficient. However!! Ditch the comps if you don't have room for them, or if they're not accurate to your book. #querytip

Bonus points for sharing comp titles/authors. WHO best represents your writing style? WHAT book(s) comes to mind similar in tone/atmosphere/theme to yours? This helps the agent (and later the editor, sales, publicity, librarians, READERS) know the exact target audience. #querytipThat said, do be sure to list titles/authors that have been published within the last 5 years or so. It proves you are keeping up to date with the market. Saying your book is like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings or Agatha Christie doesn't cut it. #querytip

It is Very Important to know the genre & market for your ms. Is this MG, YA, adult (market/audience)? Is this contemporary, historical, fantasy, romance, mystery, sci-fi, thriller (genre)? You're doing yourself a disservice without this! #querytipBonus points for sharing comp titles/authors. WHO best represents your writing style? Shake things up. Break a mold. Try something new in your genre. Be daring. I reject MANY well-written manuscripts because the writing/tropes/angle is so stale/redundant for me, and I have piles of similarly structured stories in my query box. /1
