I have received several queries saying a person I don't know has "referred" them to me, and while queries are good regardless, this feels weird. It's not a strike against the writers, but I fear they think there's a connection when there's not. #pubtip

If you think you need an exciting prologue because nothing exciting happens in your book for 5 chapters...what you need is 5 new chapters.

Adding to this, if you insist on including the five pages from the middle of the book in your query instead of the first five pages (as requested), you need a new beginning. If you can't win a reader over in the beginning, it doesn't matter how great pages 110-115 are. #querytip

Quick little #querytip: if you call an agency to ask about their submission process, and someone kindly takes the time to walk you through it, don't HANG UP when they say they'll have to read your letter before they decide. Can't wait to put your query right in the trash!

If you MIGHT be interested in requerying an agent one day down the road, it MIGHT not be in your best interest to respond to their personalized rejection telling them you “might” consider querying them with your next project. You never know when they MIGHT remember you. #querytip

Remember to appeal to us on emotional + aesthetic levels in your pitch. It's easy to get in your head + have a mental list of facts to include. But if you engage us emotionally, we'll feel like we get it (+ care!), even if your characters are in a world we've never seen before.

absolutely this 👇🏽👇🏽 high concepts and powerhouse comp titles are eye-catching for sure, but agents also want to get a solid sense of both the heart and the craft behind the concept in your pitch. don't just grab our attention, sustain it. #pubtip

#querytip A lot of the time, agents sit in very close proximity to each other. If you query multiple agents at the same agency, they're going to find out, and it isn't a good look for you.

#querytip #amwriting #writetip in both your query and your book, it's best to be specific and original about societal structures & evils. "The Organization" "The Kingdom" "The Darkness" "The Guardian" "The Entity" - as proper nouns, these feel not thoroughly developed enough. 1/

#querytip I am NOT the right fit for novels that use an epistolary format! It just doesn’t grab me; I need to be immersed in the POV, and epistolary dilutes that for me
