@BookEndsJessica I've really enjoyed your videos on youtube! :DShould the #daniellesmith incident, be a catalyst for change in the way agents and Illustrators/Authors work, and maybe a cry for better communication and a more open working relationship between both parties?
Thank you! This is a fantastic question. I’d love to hear from authors on their thoughts. #askagent

If you don’t feel your agent is communicating enough you need to start a conversation about what works for you. Some of my best author-agent relationships are those in which the author told me what was working & what she needed. #askagent

It’s harder for agents to take advantage of authors who insist upon communication & a partnership. And who learn about the business side of publishing. #askagent

Primarily though, authors need to advocate for themselves & view author/agent relationship as a business partnership instead of a boss/employee relationship (with agent as boss). #askagent

Sadly I think there will always be those who take advantage of others. We can always use change. I’m a believer that change is good. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Actually I have a question about that. Why do agents sometimes ask for a synopsis with the manuscript submission? I follow directions of course, I just don't understand.Great question! Because they don't always finish the manuscript, but still want to see how the author executed the ending. Some agents will read the synopsis first to see if the ms stays on course. If not, they might not invest as much into reading the full. #askagent

.@BookEndsJessica @BookEndsKim is this true about querying in August, or a myth? #askagent twitter.com/jess_a_turnbul…No one at @bookendslit should ever delete without reading. Besides that, myth. Query away. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent Are agents interested if a publishing house makes an offer, but the book was never queried? Can we query after and what do we say? Thank you.Sure. I would query and say you just received an offer from such-and-such publisher and are looking for an agent to negotiate and help grow your career. Then continue with the standard pitch, etc. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Would love to know your definition of a query. It seems to be a term used interchangeably!I'd be curious to know how. A query is a one-page letter pitching your book for submission, similar to a cover letter for a resume. It should include a blurb for your book, title, word count, genre and an author bio, as well as any contact information. #askagent #amquerying

@BookEndsJessica Jessica, are you firm on these numbers when reviewing queries? I've got a thriller around 72k about cults (I saw this on your MSWL) that I'd love to query you on. Thanks!I'm not firm and if the idea grabs me I'll still request, but publishers might be firm. #askagent

Shana Schwarz @shanaschwarz
@BookEndsJessica Would a series of 3 romance novels be good around 65k each? I noticed you said single-title should be 80+.No. That's still too short unless you are targeting one of the categories at Harlequin. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Thanks, Jessica, but I have to ask, why don't you read the pages of compelling queries? I'm assuming because of market or you have something similar already? #askagentSometimes I just go ahead and request. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Good afternoon! I have a question for you. When writers go to Writer's Conferences and Pitch Slams, should they have copies of their query letter, manuscript, and/or synopsis printed out for agents and editors or is everything pretty much paperless and completed by email?I don't think you need to bother. Few agents will ask for hardcopy. Almost everyone reads electronically now. So save a tree and just bring yourself. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica I've asked around, was advised on Absolute Write that the query should start with 'the blurb' (Main Character/Goal/Stakes) and *then* bio & novel metrics. Is the below wrong?"Dear Ms. Faust,
John is a convict. He wants a second chance...
(more plot)
Conclude with metrics/bio."
I don't think there are any tried & True rules. That's fine. It's also fine to have a paragraph of intro material that includes title, genre, word count and such. #askagent

Allie McCormack ✨ @AllieMcCormackK
It's gotten harder now than back in the day when the big publishers took submissions and had guidelines, and we could aim for the word count of the publisher/imprint we were targeting. *sighs for those Good Ol' Days* I wish I could figure out how word count translates to pages! twitter.com/BookEndsJessic…If double-spaced it's probably still safe to say 250 words per page. For any adult fiction you are fairly safe in the 80,000-100,000 range for word count. #askagent
